Sci-Fi/Space Opera recommendations?

There seems to be a lack of good sci-fi/space opera books out there lately.

Anyone have any good recommendations?

Some of the stuff I really enjoyed:

  • Simon Green's Deathstalker series
  • David Weber's Dahak series (I started and eventually burned out of the Honor Harrington stuff)
  • Jack McDevitt's Hutch series
  • Jack Campell's Lost Fleet (although, now on book 4 and it's starting to drag)
I tried some Ian Douglas but didn't care for it.

Thanks.

Well, you can always go back and read the original stuff. The Skylark and Lensmen series by EE "Doc" Smith. :D

Hello,

I have a recommendation for an awesome SF series, with one caveat. The series that I am going to recommend has some scenes of extreme brutality, they are not explicit; however they are present, particularily in the first book. The series is The Gap into Conflict by SR Donaldson. It is a five book series.

Once you are past the first book (and even during the first book) you will find some of the best characters, both heroes and villains imaginable.
