Avenger Experience?

Anyone who's actually played an avenger, how often does their extra damage feature actually trigger in play?

Just curious how this plays out.

In the two combats I was in with one, the second with 15+ guys.... Once. And it was cause I did it to a ranged only combatant. Then I missed. The real extra damage is from rolling twice. Pursuit one, by the way.
 

Retribution one here. In a small party (3 chars) with no defender, I was getting hit 3 or 4 times per turn. With 18 Int (Deva), I was making a lot of OHKOs.
 

Pursuit certainly looks better due to retribution being potentially suicidal.
Would it have helped if you have a non-sticky defender?
E.g. chaladin with several distant attacks or shielding swordmage?
The combination of a mark penalty, being punished for not chasing the defender, or ... drawing an OA (and subsequent extra pain) from a pursuit avenger looks like it could be very dirty (and amusing).

It was suicidal. But I managed to survive the encounter above bloodied, thanks to the Bard's Majestic Word and that class ability that grants temp HP when you kill an enemy. Was getting 9 THP per kill, IIRC.

It also helped that they were mostly minions, 2 hits would just go to the THP buffer, and I'd get a nice +8 to damage vs a real enemy.
 


The thing is, if I had the other class feature, It wouldn't have came up. In those 2 combats, I never got attacked by something I didn't oath when I had something oathed.
Barbarians with +42 static damage bonus at level 16 are rather more 'sticky' in drawing fire then a person with +18 who has 5 or 6 higher ac.
 

Scratch my previous post ... I can't seem to think of any items that grant temporary resist all till end of next turn.
There's heavy armour and shields, but they're not relevant here .. best I can think of is ironskin belt, and that only works against weapon attacks.

Cloak of Resistance (PHB p250) does exactly that. 5 resistance to all until the end of your next turn (more resistance with higher level versions)

Awesome!
For a level +1 bump (over a boring amulet of protection), it's a bargain!
What's more, everybody wants a neck slot item anyhow, so why not this one?
