Forked Thread: How do you feel about online gaming?

Forked from: More Infos About DDI / Campaign Tools

With the announcement that the virtual gametable has been put off indefinitely I see a lot of complaints. Yet, WotC's polls tend to show it is overall not important to their community. So, I was curious how ENWorld feels about online gaming and the tools we have so far.

There was supposed to be a poll, but a distraction meant that I lost to ENWorld's timer.

I basically had three questions:

1) Do you play online, and if you don't how interested are you?
2) How satisfied are you with the current tools (are they great, just good enough, or don't meet your minimum needs to play online)?
3) Would you be more interested in tools from WotC, less interested, or indifferent.

Well, I want to try and start up a PBP sometime. I do not play 4E, so the game table for the DDi would be of no use to me. The PBP format is what I think would suit my needs best I think.:)

In the unlikely event that I could not get a live game I might consider doing it online. I've never tried it, though.

90% of my DnD playing is online in maptool. I think its fantastic and gets better with every release. If the DDi gametalbe is ever released I'll at least take a look at it, but since maptool is free it would really need to blow me away.

Yes, every week

2) How satisfied are you with the current tools (are they great, just good enough, or don't meet your minimum needs to play online)?
Just good enough. Not sure if you meant WoTC tools or tools in general, but I think tight integration with VTT and monster/player/campaign databases would make it far more functional

3) Would you be more interested in tools from WotC, less interested, or indifferent.

I don't, and never would, play online. I would leave the hobby if that were my only option. It just doesn't do anything for me.

I agree with Eric. It holds no appeal for me at all. Gaming, for me, is as much about the social event as it is the game itself.

I somewhat agree. I prefer face to face gaming by a longshot (and I am generally a non-social person).

However, I have a favorite gaming group from years ago that are scatter across the country. Two are in San Francisco, one in Seattle, one in DC, one in Utah and the rest here in DE or nearby. I would love to start a regular game again and the only option would be online.

For me, the tools are not up to my minimum standards (and cost is an important part of that).

As for companies, I have pros and cons with WotC that generally balance out. I know support will be more stable if WotC produces it. However, I no longer trust that their business decisions are made with the customer as a major factor.

I've done it a number of times. It is a very poor cousin to live gaming. D&D is not an ideal game for online play IMO. There are some decent tools out there, but given my experiences thus far - more tools could not change the essential experience.
