.... those PF covers are amazing, especially the monster book! Even though the PF inconic PCs annoy me (stylistically) , and I won't be playing PF, the covers make me want to buy the books anyway! :)

(I may just fork this thread to further discuss that...)

So this got me thinking-

Back when i was a kid- art and a brief product description was all we had to entice us to buy- things were always shrinkwrapped in game/book stores in my area.

Heres a few though that the cover/box art totally caused me to buy-

And this one-the title was so bad (taken at face value-only later after reading did the title fall into place/seem perfect). But the whole vibe of this Adventurer afraid to touch the axe (balastor's), totally drew me in.

Those are just a few- but for whatever reason those covers really hit me hard as a kid.

Have you ever bought a RPG book or game based solely on the cover/box art?

Yeah, what Galeros said. THe closest I've come was probably when I stumbled upon the first two Dragon Warriors books in a bookstore. Didn't even know until looking more closely that they were RPG books, what with them being little paperback novel sized and shaped. I'll see if I can track down some reasonable images. . .

Well, poor scans it is. Never mind.

Jeffb,
well the covers and art of "Spelljammer" and "Dark Sun", with their gorgeous art sent me down a course that ended up with me learning 3D art, hehe. So yes, lot of the old stuff had absolutely gorgeous artwork,

The full page pencil sketch in the original Fiend Folio, guy fighting a lizard king? The bees bloody knees!! (this means "smashing, superb!" for those not accustomed ot us weird folk in the Northern British Isles, hehe)

Look at this, SMACK right between the eyes, D&D in...space. What more did I need to buy, eh? :D

Dark Sun...Howard's Hyborean age, baroque squalor and splendor, dirty deeds done dirt cheap, slavery, survival mixed with ecologicla diaster and Clark Ashton Smith and other such wonders...

more seriously, art in later 1st and early/mid 2nd ed was absolutely FANTASTIC, Easley, Parkison and Caldwell are some of my artistic heroes :o

sorry for the off topic, but, part of yer signature:
"I feel books like "A Princess of Mars", "The Swords of Lankhmar" and "The Black Company" are far more important to your gaming experience than whether you choose between OSRIC, Labyrinth Lord, or D&D4E." - The Ravyn
I couldn't agree more! :) Add in "Casca"; ""Waylander" and some good films like "The Ultimate Warrior"

Aus Snow,
hey!! it was Dragon Wariors that got me itno D&D!! :)
I was devouring fantasy books in the library, came upon one of the Dragon Warriors books ("Lands of Legend" iirc) and got very intrigued by the idea of "RPG", and soon found D&D
and yes it too had great art! :)
