Not that keen on the background for the Raven Queen. Nerull falling for her is a neat addition, but I don't much like that her ambition is to rule over the dead.
IMC she's more of an Orpheus type, who ventured willingly into Nerull's realm (with her raven familiar
) looking for her beloved and their children. After much looking, she eventually garnered enough power to transfer the seat of Nerull's power to the Shadowfell, thus robbing him of much strength, and bested him in combat. As Chronicles of Riddick taught us, "you keep what you kill", so she took over Nerull's seat and moved to the Shadowfell to continue the search for her family. As the Shadowfell began to get a hold on her spirit, her heart grew ever colder, and soon winter began to call her Mistress. By taking her fate into her own hands, she earned that mantle as well.
To this day it is said that ravens everywhere (including raven familiars) are searching for the spirits of the Raven King and Princes. The shadar-kai, who show unending zest to stave off the Shadowfell's influence (something that has earned the admiration of the Queen), are also said to take on this quest (akin to how a Christian Knight would search for the Holy Grail).
