A list of all possible Damage Reductions?

Oryan77

Hey, I'd like to compile a list of damage reductions that any given monster might have. Would someone mind telling me what they are so I can make sure I haven't left anything out?

Also, does anyone know what monster has the most types of DR? I'm just curious how many different DR a single creature might have. Thanks!

Oh, here is what I have:

Piercing
Bludgeoning
Slashing
Silver
Adamantine
Cold Iron
Magic
Epic
Chaotic
Evil
Good
Lawful

and (must be both)

Looks like you've got it all covered. As for what monster has the most... there are a few in the ELH with three:

The anaxim: good and silver and epic;

The hecatoncheires: good and cold iron and epic;

And probably a couple others.

I'm slightly confused as to what you're asking for.

A DR of 5/adamantine reduces damage from everything EXCEPT adamantine, doesn't it? So wouldn't it have all damage reduction categories EXCEPT adamantine? Or did I misread something somewhere?

Theroc - yes, but another creature with DR 5/Piercing Epic Adamantine would have DR against all weapons including Adamantine weapons unless they were both Piercing AND had a +6 or better enhancement.

You are correct. DR 5/adamantine would reduce damage taken by 5 from any source that isn't adamantine in origin. However, rather than write out everything that the creature is protected from (which is indeed a long list) we write out what it isn't protected from (which is a much shorter list).

Thus, "DR 10/cold iron or good" would mean that the possessor of the ability is protected from all sources except ones that are either cold iron or good. "DR 10/cold iron and good" would be protected from all assaults that are not both cold iron and good.

The better way of thinking about it is from the attacker's perspective. DR tells the opponent what theymust need to bypass the DR. Thus, DR 5/adamantine needs an adamantine source to bypass it. Dr 10/cold iron or good needs either a cold iron source or a good source to bypass the DR. DR 10/cold iron and good means that the attacker needs a source that is both cold iron and good to bypass the DR.

I assume you are not interested in War of the Burning Sky.

The trillith in that campaign have some bizarre damage reductions - for example, weapons that are alive or once were alive; a morale bonus against fear; an initiative bonus greater than +2 etc. etc.

There's also the non-specific DR that can't be overcome, usually denoted "DR #/-", like what barbarians get. Would you consider this a DR 'type' for monsters?

A rakshasa lich has dr 15/piercing and bludgeoning and magic and good
I used one as a BBEG once. I don't think I would do it again.

There are some monsters that we've converted in the Creature Catalog that have some weird DR like DR X/wood or DR X/obsidian. I'm not positive, but there may be a few official WotC monsters like that, as well.
