DDI Changes - PH3 Previews! New price

Movie tickets in my town are $5. Really cheap, I know!

But the RPG cost vs. Movie cost comparison has been floating around for years, and it's never held water.

It's like saying "Oh, well you play Scrabble for 3 hours, that's the value of a movie ticket for each person each time you play!"
Trust me, D&D's main competition is Star Trek.

A thought; they're selling us completed PHB3 materials 9 months in advance. Wouldn't play-test material be a better option, so they can soak in the feedback from the community?

I'm not familiar with the development cycle on a game book like this. Is the whole book basically finished 9 months prior to going to print?

My theory as to why they are doing this is because you can pay for DDI and basically get most of the rules from the books without paying for them. Why pay $30 when you can pay $10? This is basically WotC saying, "we get people do this, and that's great but we need to make $30 off of a book" and then utilizing the early-adopters to do it. A three month subscription is $25 - just about the same price-point. Then it's just a cost-benefit analysis. If WotC gets enough people grabbing subscriptions to offset the cost of people not buying the print books in favor of the DDI stuff, then it's a win.

Personally, I think it's a pretty neat idea. However, my biggest worry is that it will distrthe e-zines.

Can you extend more than one year at the current price???
Thanks! :)
Not at this time. The system may allow you to extend for more than one subscription term, but this will be corrected on the back end and you will be refunded for any extensions beyond the first one.
Damn I did 2 years subscription and it worked, I thought I might save a bit! Oh well worth a try
Not quite sure why there's complaints over the DDI price increase since from the very start of the paid DDI subscription they've said the current price would be a temporary introductory price.
Yeah it is amazing how much can be inferred about the financial health/popularity of/success of/business model of 4E and WotC from a price increase that was announced a year ago when they introduced DDI and the cheaper first year introductory rate!:hmm:
It's definitely worth my money. I am finding ddi indispensable. The software continues to improve, updates are substantive and right on schedule, communication from WotC is excellent (thanks, Trevor!), and the character builder is suberb.

Things I do think need to be fixed:

- It won't keep me logged in. I have to re-log in every time I visit the site.
- The bonus tools are currently riddled with bugs and usability issues; the encounter builder doesn't pull stat blocks from the compendium, and you can't save for later use.
- Copying from the Compendium has weird formatting issues, including the fact that a monster's level and xp appears before its name when copied.

I'm fairly sure that those issues will be addressed, though. It's nice not needing to be cynical.
I really get annoyed by the log in thing, especially if I log in on the DnD page every time I have to push the log in button twice.. i.e. push the button, page reloads, still not logged in, push again, page reloads, now logged in!

Have you noticed that it only does that on the main page? As in, if you go to a Dragon/Dungeon article first and log in on that page, you only have to click once. It's weird.

(Still needs to be fixed. Wizards' site: the subject haters and fans can agree about. :))

Not sure about him, but for me it happens on all pages.

Well, not exactly. The way most book distribution is set up right now, WotC is probably selling a $30 book to its middle-men for something around $12.
