OotS #656 Is Up

So does V escape or is redemption in the cards?

I kind of like the dispel magic on the amulet and o-chul smashing it idea..... so it probably won't happen.

More waiting.........

... Never mind the 'whacking with a stick' part. Didn't Xykon just Meteor swarm and Maximized Lightning bolt his own phylactery? Those spells have areas of effect you know...

I must say, I'm a bit worried for The Big O. Xykon's "Now, where'd that elf go?" strongly implies that any threat O-Chul posed has been eliminated, which would imply (slightly less strongly) that O-Chul's been killed.

Nah. No Xs in the eyes. :)

But the last time we see him is at least a round or two before Xykon starts looking for V...

My prediction: He's dying, and his final act will be to inspire the MitD to go against Xykon, buying V the time and distraction needed to escape.

V's caster level isn't epic any more. Dispel magic would certainly fail, and even greater dispel magic would be very unlikely to work (given what the past few strips have revealed about Xykon's level and feats, we have to assume that either Durkon got a natural 20 on his dispel check in the Battle of Azure City, or Xykon's invisibility came from a scroll).

Well, that was anti-climactic...

Yeah...he had Xykon's phylactery, and instead of smashing it right then and there, and being able to take his time about it...it's a holy symbol AND phylactery, while I don't expect him to be an expert at spellcasting, I'd think he'd have the logical sense to figure the damn thing had some extra protection....

INSTEAD of doing that, or (if already in the same room) running off to do it in secret, he marches right in there, has to roll initiative, and begins to do so as Xykon pelts him with high level spells.... freaking brilliant! O_o

Impressive. This is the first time my feed reader (Google) picked up the ENWorld post before the OotS post. You work fast, Dausuul.

That or Xykon has extreme ADD. Which strikes me as pretty likely.

Or both. Things don't sound good for our favorite paladin.

Damn those narrative laws!

A lot of fiction lost its allure once I understood the law of limited characters. Can I have my fictional naivety back?
Yeah, I no longer let my wife (Master's degree in English) tell me what she thinks will happen next when we watch TV. Ah, ignorance is bliss!

I don't see how O'Chul had any opportunity to escape with the phylactery. First, he was already in combat with both Redcloak and the lackey. Right after he picked the symbol up, he was attacked by the lackey. As soon an he killed the lackey, he was attacked by Xykon. Since Xykon has spells with long range and knows all the terrain, runnning away wouldn't really be an option. Instead, he took the one round that he had at his disposal, and gave a full attack to the symbol. It wasn't guaranteed he could destroy it, but he had much better odds of damaging the symbol than running away, or killing Xykon.
