WotC forums down for a week or two?

My memory is fuzzy here, but didn't ENWorld go through a period of "read only" mode during a system migration a while ago? That lasted a few days? Perhaps someone with the facts on that can give us some perspective.

I recently had to deal with a user in the UK who was outraged because my 180 person company's backup system takes the financial system offline, and sometimes runs into his working hours. He was explaining to me that where he used to work (Halliburton), that despite their worldwide operations they were able to keep the financial system up 24x7, and wanted to know why I couldn't do the same with my relatively simple financial system, which I run on completely depreciated hardware at minimum cost.

Of course, it has to do with where we spend our money. I've figured out what it would cost to accommodate this one user for the 2-3 hours of access he loses at month end. It's not worth it, and my management agrees.

To posit that WotC "isn't spending the budget in the right places" assumes that there isn't something much, much, better to be spending their money on. Perhaps this was the least expensive option, and the availability of the forums is not considered worth the cost of the measures it would require to keep them on line.

That said, it is still a little disappointing to me personally. I just posted it to make sure that the powers that be know that I am inconvenienced, for what it's worth.

I suppose it could be a combination of budget, manpower, and being overly cautious?

Perhaps they won't really be down that long, but they're being safe so they don't get crucified when they don't hit the deadline?

I wonder how much of a change it is? From the desciption, it sounds like just an update to the latest version of vbulletin (which has blogs, groups, picture albums, etc. as seen at EN World), but that only takes 10 minutes to upgrade.

So I'm guessing they're going with a completely new platform which does the same thing.

On a side note: is this affecting the website? I can login on DDI but can't access articles or Compendium.

Recently I have received a strange e-mail asking me to go back to DDI (I cancelled a trimestral account for an annual).

Checked DDI information and my account is working.

A mistake or anybody else is facing that problem?

It shouldn't, or at least that is what I was told when I nagged bugged WotC_Trevor about it last week.

When I see him online today, I will ask him to grab some pointy sticks and head down to the IT and do some poking.

Don't know weither it is this but something is affecting the regular web site.

Just did a little testing and with IE8 the D&D page does not display and i get a message saying that the site returned a http error that prevent the site from rendering properly. Firefox 3.5 will show the site and checkin the left menus work but the homepage is not rendering properly.

Yesterday Compendium was bugget at home, on Google Chrome 3 Beta. Logged it but whe I tried to use Compendium it was like I wasn't a subscriber.

Gen Con Hangover?

I recall reading during the Gleemax discussions that WotC's website and DDI are using a Microsoft platform, while vBulletin is Linux-based. So maybe they're moving their messageboards to a Microsoft-based platform. Something I read suggested having everything on the same platform would make integration and maintenance easier.
