Character Builder Updating & Macs

Every single time I try and update the Character Builder it requires major system surgery to get it to work. I've found no way around this and tried all the usual suspects as indicated by the support forums, FAQ's and even just random suggestions from whomever weighed in on the matter.

The only thing that is different for me than anyone else that I've seen in these discussions is that I run the CB through Parallels with Windows 7. I've tried booting into Windows 7 and doing the updates and fixes that way as well and no change.

So, I'm wondering if there are other Mac users out there who experience the same problem and if so, whether they've found a way around it or just suffer through registry editing every month.

I'm using VMware Fusion and Windows XP on my MacBook to run the Character Builder and I haven't experienced any issues with any of the updates. I know that doesn't help you very much, but maybe it means you can narrow down the reason for the problems to Parallels/Windows 7?

Get a PC.

I don't think it's a Parallel's issue since it doesn't work when booting into Windows 7 through Bootcamp either. But it does help knowing that you're not having issues with XP. If I can narrow it down to a Windows 7 specific issue then I can possibly revert to XP.

My main concern was that it seems to be a Mac issue as others have reported no problems with Windows 7, hence trying to find out from other Mac users if they're having any similar problems.

I have had no problems with XP in Fusion on my Mac as well. Technically, it can't be a Mac issue as you're running it in a virtual machine which simulates the hardware and fully runs the OS you choose (Windows 7 in this case). I would suspect it has much more to do with Win7 than anything else.

I haven't had experience yet with Win7 (Have it installed on one VM but haven't used it yet) but I would suggest checking for Permission problems maybe? Or when you go to launch the CB run it as "administrator" (I think that's a procedure in Win7) so the installer launches in an administrative mode. I've had problems with Server 2008 and running certain applications (MS Daemons even) that don't give any errors but as soon as I run it in Admin mode it works fine, similarly w/ installers. Yes, even though I am logged in as a Domain Admin I have these problems, annoys me to no end.

If I can get a moment or 10 I'll try the installer in my Win7 VM and see if I have any problems.

While I don't have it in Win 7, I know people who do, and they have no problems at all. Granted, they are running it native, not through the techno-magic used to get Win 7 running on a mac. Is it possible that the software used to run Win 7 on a Mac is not fully updated for Win 7 yet?

(Honestly don't know.)

While I ain't a MAC user I use it in Window 7 and so far have had no issues with it. You might need to use the compatibility troubleshooter in Windows 7 though.
As far as i know CB writes stuff to the registery and Win 7 does not allow that kind of carry on anymore. As far as I can tell there is now a user specific registery equavilent for each profile in Windows 7.
To run the compatibility troubleshooter go to the .exe and right click and select the Troubleshooter option. It should sort any issues.

i actually use Windows XP with Parallels (v3, dunno if that makes a diff ...) and have no problems. So there's another data point for you. :)
