Torchlight

Yep, fun game, indeed. :D

Definitely looking forward for the multiplayer online game they have in the works. :)

I am entirely of two minds about that.

I looked at the Torchlight forums and the intense focus on optimization was a little..... off-putting. I'm enjoying that I can spend my talent points on whatever abilities look the most fun rather than worrying about being competitive with others.

Sounds JUST like Diablo 2 discussions to me!

Downloaded it and played it this morning until it crashed to desktop. Really it's just a re-skinned version of Diablo - but that's okay. It looks good, maps are more linear than Diablo's dungeon maps were so they're easier to clear of all contents, tons of 1-item=1-space storage (your own, your pet, your stash and a shared stash for loading up your other characters), pets can run out of the dungeon to sell the loot they're carrying, and cool abilities.

Downside: I did have that crash just when I was getting into it, and it seems more difficult to target opponents than Diablo (or maybe that's just me).

Massive Multiplayer? Well I'll be interested to see what they're trying to do with it but unless they're going to move it to an open world to explore rather than endless dungeon crawls I'm not likely to subscribe.

Well it is going to be a free to play MMO. The Gamer's With Jobs podcast did an interviewer with a bunch of the designers on a recent episode and they discusses different details about it. It is following the "freemium" model of a lot of Korean MMOs and even DDO where it is free to play but you can spend real world currency to gain certain things.

Another interesting part of the interview to me was they mentioned that they wanted to make it a casual friendly MMO.

Everything I've seen and heard about Torchlight says that it's a really fun game that I'd really enjoy playing.

Pity about the DRM, though - I prefer to buy my games rather than rent them until the DRM stops allowing me to play.

I just picked up Torchlight on Steam for 50% off. I couldn't pass up that price.

Another Torchlight-buyer here, my christmas is saved :) - bought Mass Effect during november for 50% off, and that was very well spent money. Great game, can´t wait for ME 2!

Does this (DRM) mean you can only install the game on one computer? I'd like to install on my travel laptop in addition to my home desktop.

It sounds like if you buy the game directly there is a limited number of activations. The Steam version does not have that limitation. I'm not sure if this thread reflects the most recent info:
Torchlight DRM - Colony of Gamers

While Steam does technically provide DRM, it does so in a way that I find completely transparent and non-intrusive. With Steam, I can download games to multiple computers and my data syncs between them ("to the cloud"). I do NOT have to be connected to the internet to play. I can send friends "guest passes" to try my games for a while. Steam has been a very stable product for me, and their sales and support for older games are awesome.
