Favourite OoP boardgames that you have managed to keep, reacquire or looking for.

For those old enough, you know that, back in the '80's Hasbro had triumvirate of games that followed a *military* theme. I'm sure everyone here has heard of or played Axis and Allies. There was also Shogun, the one that is out now is similar to the original version, but I like the original better than what they are producing now.

Then there was Fortress America. Of the 3 Fortress America was never reproduced into another edition. It stayed in the '80's.

Now I had been searching for a copy for quite awhile and I have found some in the past but they where all going for $150 + and no matter how much I loved Fortress America I wasn't willing to pay that much for it.

Just recently I finally found a copy for $50. I bought it immediately and not only did I get it for $50 but it is in very good condition with all of its pieces! I know of places that carry extra's but it is nice to get the whole game and not have to track down missing pieces.

So, I am in Fortress America bliss and can't wait to get my friends to play.

Anyone else have games they like that are Oop?

Looks like you got a pretty good deal. The ebay auctions available mostly start a little less and aren't in as good of shape but few are complete and most will probably top that price (with shipping) before all is done.


It appears that Milton Bradley created Fortress America in the mid-Eighties as a boardgame in response, perhaps, to SPI's Invasion America from 1976 which was more of a standard wargame -

I received a copy of Invasion America as a gift from my Eighth Grade class while I was in the hospital for a tonsillectomy. I had forgotten about that until reading this thread.

I got both and actually like the newer one better, despite being a bit more abstract (with the wooden blocks). Great game!

I used to love playing Invasion America.

I guess I could probably name about a dozen OOP SPI wargames that I'd love to get my hands on!

The OOP game I'd love to get my hands on is Paths of Glory; it's on the P500 reprint list from GMT Games, but it is still a fair way from being reprinted.

The game I'm happiest to have held onto is Dune.

The game I've been happiest to acquire is Squad Leader.

Yes and yes. The game I had in the 80's was called Shogun, I was unaware that they changed the name. The new Shogun is very, very similar to the original in game board design and some of the rules, but different enough to be their own thing.

I've played and enjoyed both. I really have no preference but wouldn't mind acquiring the 80's Shogun.

The game I'm happiest to have held onto is Dune.

OMG! You seriously have this game? I didn't own it but my friend did and if I had known that it would become one of the *Holy Grail* of board games I would've certainly bought it off of him. I really enjoyed playing that game.

Yes, I really do. I don't own that many older games - most of my collection was published in the last 10 years - but there are a few older gems.

FFG have the rights to the mechanics but not the world; I wouldn't be surprised to see a rethemed Dune in the next year or so from them. However, without the "Dune" universe, it won't be quite as good.

YThe new Shogun is very, very similar to the original in game board design and some of the rules, but different enough to be their own thing.

It's a lot more similar to Wallenstein, though (basically the same game with a different map).

It's a little more than just a different map, though, as the events are quite different as well. (I much prefer Shogun).
