The New Red-Box...

I'm not trying to start anything with this post so please dont take it the wrong way. But for some reason after reading the WoTC page on this product, I got the sense that this is the end of the 4e line itself... Did anyone else get this feeling as well?

Since nobody outside of WotC has any hard sales figures for 4E D&D, it's hard to say exactly. A pessimist may see it as a harbinger of "the end". An optimist may see it differently as a sign of the "new beginning" of success.

LOL--I don't know if they'll be able to draw new players in like they want to, but they'll certainly have a lot of old-timers lining up to get this stuff. Nostalgia does sell.

As for the dungeon tiles in a box--that is one of those ideas that it is so intuitively obvious that you've got to wonder why they didn't think of it before.

I wonder why they just didn't start out with a box set like this with 4E - seeing that they said one of their goals was to attract new players...

I totally agree and have been touting this basic/advanced approach for awhile. But I think the reason they didn't do this sooner was that they rushed 4E out of the gate a bit too quickly.

Do kids today watch Nick/Cartoon Network/TV?

My younger relatives who are still in elementary school, actually do watch Nickelodeon and the Cartoon Network. Though I've noticed many of them seem to grow out of it, by the time they are pre-teens. That's when they start playing a lot of video games and/or want their own cell phone.

I've heard rumblings elsewhere that the boxed set only goes up to level two. Can anyone with a subscription and thus access tothe article, confirmor deny this?

Note: If this is true it is a deal breaker as far as getting one for my son. I mean I just don't understand why WotC can't put together a decent basic set (You know like the one they are emulating with their packaging)... IMO, half the heroic tier (lvls 1-5) should have been a minimum range for this set.

Said set only ran to Level 3 (I think the Big Black Box from 1991 is the only Basic Set that got up to Level 5), and the new Basic Set will have at least twice as many options for character types as the old. I'd like to see it go higher, but I'm not sure I'd call it a 'deal-breaker' just yet.

FWIW, the original basic booklet only covered levels 1-3. It's also one of my favorite systems! :D I just have trouble seeing this as anything other than "here's two levels of 4e characters". Gah. :( I hope I'm sadly mistaken!

Wonder what exactly will be in the Rules Compendium booklet, beyond combat rules and a glossary...

True. "The box takes players from 1st level through 2nd level with a limited selection of options and choices."

(You know like the one they are emulating with their packaging)...

Levels 1-3 in the original. 36 Levels in BECMI.

Old Red Box 3/36 Levels = 8.33%

Multiply by 30 levels, You get 2.5 Levels. I wish they'd have done three levels, but I'm really looking forward to it. Especially since 9 months ago i suggested EXACTLY this during WotC's Market research focus group. I want more money for them using my ideas! ;)

I agree, if this thing is limited to two levels I'm done with it. No deal, no consideration.

My ideal Red Box: Human, elf, dwarf, halfling; Fighter, cleric, wizard, rogue; Every PHB power for 5 levels of those four classes. Some equipment to complete. Ideal.

Expansion sets could add on the rest.

I partly agree. On one hand, I'm glad there (seemingly) won't be an onslaught of random source books to have to keep track of. On the other hand, this feels like it's reinventing the wheel.

While true, only being able to level up once is kinda lame ;)
