What's with this whole vampires vs. werewolves thing?

Whats wrong with the word 'Lycan'? Its a shortening of the word Lycanthrope. Which is a mouthful to say.

I'm well aware of where the term comes from; I've read way too many Monster Manuals and am facinated enough by etymology to not understand the derivation.

this however sounds like it had dignity... could we have a remake of a lost film.
