Maximum amount of dice needed?

First Post
I was wondering what was the total amount of dice any 1 player or DM might need in any given session? I.E. If I was rolling for "x" damage, I'd roll 2d4+4 or 1d8+2, etc. What would the maximum amount of any particular dice would I need?
Don't know if that made sense, but I'd like to give my players a full set so they wouldn't have to roll twice for any given situation.

thanks.

It's highly character dependent.

For a start any weapon based character will have different dice damage based on the weapon they use.
A level 29 ranger could have 5 attacks each doing 2[W] each so they might want 5 d20s to hit and 10 d12s for damage (matching the dice on color)

I think there are some attacks that do around 9[w] at high levels
and area attacks can need lots of d20s to roll to hit.

So it's really something you have to work out character by character

As Mad Hamish said, I think that is highly dependent on your characters. You might have to just sit down and work out all the combinations, one by one for your players.

The quick and dirty answer? I say 6 sets of dice. 3 full sets for the DM and 3 sets for the players to grab from a pool. That should cover most of your action on the table. As the players level up, you might have to get an extra set or two.

Pretty much... There's no cut and dry answer, as it depends on what powers they have, and what level they are. Realistically though, at higher levels you can end up with ridiculous numbers of dice to roll, so it's probably best to just have 2 or 3 full sets so you're ready for anything you need.

As an example of a ridiculous one, lets look at a Barbarain with a Mordenkrad using Rage Strike at 30th level. Rage Strike at that level would be 9[W], which comes out to 18d6 since Mordenkrads use 2d6 for base [W] damage.

Even on crits you can get into crazy numbers of dice. In one of my games my Fighter uses a Brutal (d12's for crit dice) Execution Axe. Execution Axes do 1d12 Brutal 2 for damage, and also have the high crit property (roll 1[W] per tier on a crit). So, a crit with a +6 Brutal Execution Axe will result in a roll of 9d12's, 3 of which should also be Brutal 2 d12's (since they're based on the [W]).

Obviously carrying around 18d6's or 9d12's is a little crazy, which is why I think it's best to just stick to 2 or 3 sets.

yeah, as Mad Hamish said, it depends on the particular character. When I'm playing, I glance down my PC sheet and see how many things are 2dX or more and be sure to have that many multiples of that dice. Plus, because of area attacks I try to have about 3-4 d20s just so I can keep the old roll and still have the new roll (because I know I'd forget otherwise). But one of each is the default just in case (though if your weapon specifically doesn't require it, chances of needing a d4 or d12 are really really slim)

When DMing, I find myself generally with: 1d4, 3d6, 3d8, 2d10, 1d12, and 6d20. But that may vary slightly as you go up in level and monsters are doing harder and harder weapon hits, for example, so the d8 and 10 may go up to 4 or 5 and such since those are the typical attack damage dice.

But that's all just based on what I know I (personally) typically use as monsters and such. Your experience can(and probably will) vary.

SA with an Excecution Axe? Fancy that.

I have three full sets of dice, and I am usually okay. The only time I am short is when I shroud up to 4, and I sometimes need 6d6. I think for the most part, 2 or 3 full sets are fine. I usually only pull out the dice I need, so usually d20s, d8s, and d6s.

Thanks everyone!

Character Dependent: GOT IT.

I have 6 full sets as it stands now, so I think I'll be good until my group levels up in a few months or so...
