I think the difference between name and style is a little jarring, but it makes complete sense to me. Think of it as the Karate Kid way of rebooting by not rebooting a la Star Trek.

Actually, they know exactly what they are doing.

The single strongest predictor of box office success in the States is how much they advertise the fool thing. And the title guarantees it will get free advertising from every media outlet in the country.

Plus, silly people of my generation will go see it because it references a movie from our childhood. 10% of us will love it. 80% of us won't care much one way or another. 10% will nerd rage on their blogs for a month about Hollywood doing vile things to their childhood.

This is an overall win for them in that demographic. In most other demographics, the actual title is irrelevant.

99.5% of the rest of the country won't care in the slightest what you call it because all martial arts are the same to them. Mixed martial arts is a niche entertainment. Mixed martial arts enthusiasts who are pedantic enough to get their britches in a bunch about the title referencing the wrong art.... yeah... lots of them. And their nerd rage is totally not an elixir of happiness for me that makes me want to see the film succeed even more.

Since "Karate Kid" is being used as an insult to Jaden Smith's character, its alright. However, you know what I really want to see? a spin off called Gun-Fu Kid.

yep, he steps in to help the girl and takes a Karate stance...they say something on the lines of "what do we have here, the Karate Kid" they proceed to kick his ass.
