My family and I all agree with you, especially if you are talking the Director's Cut.
- Batman v Superman (2016) - Almost no one agrees with me, but this is underrated, in my opinion, and a fun watch. Yes, its dark, and yes the creature and fight in the end is drawn out and a bit hokey, but two-thirds of the film is really good and darkly epic, and it really captures its own vibe. People complain about Eisenstein, but I think he makes the part his own in an interesting way, and is creepily menacing. For me the most surprising part was that I actually like Ben Affleck as Batman. Who would have thunk? It also strikes the right balance for Gadot's Wonder Woman. She isn't a terribly good actress, and works better in small does, imo, but she's quite potent in this one.
Haven't seen the new one yet, but your list lines up with mine otherwise, other than I'd put Superman II and ZSJL (in that order) above Batman v Superman. And I really like Batfleck better than I thought I would, and I love the part in Suicide Squad where he takes down Deadshot. My ranking of all Superman films (I've seen):
- Superman (1978) - The classic. It is hard to be objective about this, and I still cringe with the "Can you read my mind?" sequence when I re-watch, but as a Gen Xer this was a formative film - up there with Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars. Somehow Ned Beatty is one of the most memorable characters.
- Man of Steel (2013) - IIRC, I liked it better the second time around. It has aged well - a brooding, dark vision with unusual Kryptonian aesthetics. Cavill is great, Amy Adams as well even if she diverges from Kidder.

- Superman II (1981) - What can we say about General Zod and his merry gang? They're fun, frightening, and ridiculous all at the same time. Zod and Hackman carry the film. Arguably a better movie than the first, but not quite as mythic.
- Superman (2025) - See previous post. When I re-watch it in a year or two, I might re-rank. Big gap and then...
- Justice League (2021 director's cut) - Improved enough to be a solid completion to the Synder trilogy, but I honestly think Steppenwolf was a terrible choice for a primary villain -- he's arguably the least villain in 21st century comic movies. It might have worked better as a 10-episode series. WW, Aquaman, and Cyborg are all kind of uninteresting and there's just not enough Superman. The sets of Atlantis and the Amazon island feel a bit paper-thin. And why is it so arctic in Amnesty Bay, Maine? They somehow manage to make Darkseid seem un-menacing and cartoonish.
- Superman Returns (2006) - Not a bad film, just quite forgettable. But Spacey does a great interpretation of Hackman's Luthor.
- Justice League (2017) - See above, but worse.
- Superman III (1983) - I barely remember this one. I'm guessing it wasn't the work Richard Pryor was the most proud of.
- Superman IV (1987) - Nuclear Man!
There's a HUGE gap between the first five and 6-8, another gap before 9-10. I might re-arrange 3-5 at some point, but am going with the above for now.
Thanks. From what you said, it really sounds like I'll enjoy the new film far more than the Snyder films. Standing on their own they were OK, but as an old time comic reader they really didn't have the feel of what a Superman related film should. The tone was more fitting of Batman than Superman. As a film and comics buff fan of mine put it best, Superman is a Sun God. Batman is a Night God.I just saw it. I enjoyed it - not perfect, and I still prefer the Donner film and Man of Steel, but it was good. A nice campy feel with lots of fun fiddly bits. The aesthetic was almost diametric to Man of Steel - more campy 60s ala the Fantastic Four movie than the baroque darkness of Snyder's version. It was different enough to make comparisons of better or worse unnecessary.
And that's the highest praise I could give it: It felt like its own thing, with flavors of past iterations mixed in but not dominating. It struck a nice balance of high stakes and silly fun.
I thought the weakest part, surprisingly, was Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor. He was OK, but not nearly as fun as Gene Hackman or Kevin Spacey, or even the crazy tech guy as Jesse Eisenstein played him.
Lois Lane seemed modeled after Margot Kidder's version more than Amy Adams. Brosnahan really looked and felt the part.
Mr Terrific was...terrific. Maybe my favorite character in the film. Green Lantern was fun(ny), though the costumes of the "Justice Gang" could have been better, especially GL's. Hawkgirl felt more like a background character.
Oh, and the man himself: David Corenswet very much looked the part and did well. He didn't quite have the presence of Henry Cavill or the goofy charm of Christopher Reeve, but he was solid. The dog bothered me less than I thought it would.
Overall: A good to very good film, not a great one. It lacked the epic feel of Man of Steel and the archetypal mythos and classic feel of Superman 77, but it was good enough that I wasn't disappointed and feel like it is a good start for the new DC universe.
Yes, I think that's right on and you'll really like, even love, this film. In terms of tone, it is closer to what I imagine the FF to be like or in the MCU, more like Spiderman. It feels more drawn from earlier Superman comics than the darker, later stuff. And far closer to 1978 than Man of Steel, though with a more pulpy feel than 1978 - and less "American mythos."Thanks.
