D&D 4E No 4E fey?

They don't list housecats either. I think they fall into that category. If a DM told me that there was 5 or 6 pixies in the next room, my reaction would not be to roll initiative.

Regardless of your opinion of how dangerous these creatures can be, they certainly don't encompass the idea of fey as your OP implies.

Bummer. I guess pixies, as invisible, charming, distracting, prank-laden, and musical as they might be, are no worse than a house cat (standard or pirate) and they, despite their exception taste in clothes and off-broadway musicals, shouldn't be considered even the slightest bit fey.

Now Tinker Bell in Hook is just upwards of awesomely potent and can kick ass independent of size.

Sprite size doesn't need to be a limit on there prowess in a world of magic... they have Will'o Wisps...

I am remembering the mockery in the voice of one of the young mages in Hairy Potter "Cornish Pixies!?" and how all were disabled by a single spell.

Let me clarify my point:

1. While probably more mischievous than most cats, and definitely more intelligent, I would be hard pressed to call them "monster-worthy" I don't see them as serious threats. Even a unicorn or a riding horse could easily do more damage physically then a pixie.

2. When I said encompass, I meant that they are not the entirety of the fey world. Your post says no 4e fey stuff, but there is plenty of that, just not the three "creatures" you are looking for.

Thanks, I believe I understood those points and was respectfully disagreeing. There are many things more deadly than straight physical damage.

And if a pixie isn't the epitome of fey then perhaps they might be defined as Tinafey and they live in the TinaFeywild. Perhaps you'll see a post about just that in the 4E homebrew section tomorrow.

And if a pixie isn't the epitome of fey....

Not for any normal definition of fey (though I'll grant that everything related to D&D is abnormal).
Fey is an adjective referring to:
  • Fate, particularly fatal dooms.
  • Suffering from an enchantment.
  • Being otherworldly, supernatural, or enchanted in nature.
  • Unnaturally high spirits, usually preceding death.

While sprites, pixies, and grigs are otherworldly in nature, and often possessed of high spirits (making them fey creatures), they are hardly the only ones that get described as such, nor are they the entirety of the genre.

Can they be interesting opponents? Yes.
Should they be combat opponents? Probably not. Too many suspensions of disbelief shatter at the idea of engaging in combat with Tinkerbell or similar creatures ("I hit it with a fly swatter! I slap a jar over it! What do you mean it's still fighting!?").
Do non-combat opponents need actual stats? Not in 4E they don't. In fact, not giving fey creatures stats makes them better opponents, because their abilities are never predictable and can always scale as the story (and tastes of the players, and the DM is always a player of the game) requires.

Good luck.

If your players are not going to attack them, then they don't need stats. This applies to anything in the game. Dealing with pixies et al could easily be handwaved as a skill challenge otherwise.

Good luck putting a pixie on top of one of these:

I see no beaks, sir. WHERE ARE THE BEAKS?

Otherwise, that's glorious, and the pixies need a tiny little saddle.
