Differences between Mongoose RQ I and II

Just wanted to bump- MRQ2 seems to be a big improvement on MR1. I'm quite impressed- and I've been a longtime non-fan of Mongoose in general.

Both of the Glorantha books are top notch as well, but not having delved deeply (again) into Glorantha since HEROWARS first surfaced- I'd forgotten just how overwhelming it can be to get your head around it.

The Ruins of Glorantha book is frankly a great buy regardless of system- it's low on RQ crunch, there are some very good fleshed out ruins/adventure sites, alot of bare bones sketches and for the true old school "chart & table-er" the first 30 or so pages are fantastic for rolling up some very interesting adventure locales. Very useful book.

It's certainly given me reason to be more open to buying Mongoose products: likely some Traveller stuff. If they've done Traveller as well as they have MRQ2, it should be a worthy successor.
Thanks a lot for your feedback, Jeff. Since I share your feelings, I feel it's pretty safe for me to invest.

You talked about there being "two Glorantha books" you looked at. The Ruins of Glorantha book, which seems cool, and what is the other one? The "Second Age" main book? If so, I have the MRQI Second Age book. I really don't know if I should reinvest in yet the same stuff again. I would rather not. Even if it prompts me to convert stuff over to MRQ II when I use it, so be it.

Now a days it pays to go visit a companies website. They may have things like rules for CONVERSION between 1 and 2, and maybe errata for the main core book:

I have bought nearly every Mongoose Traveller book, as well as their new Judge Dredd, and most of the Paranoia books, and I have been very pleased.

I bought the MRQ1 Glorantha:Second Age book- I picked up a used copy at Noble Knight. I didn't realize the MRQ2 version would be in stock in a few days- otherwise I would have waited for it. IDK if the MRQ2 version is really worth it or not unfortunately- but the MRQ1 version is quite good- and should work just fine I would think since it's pretty crunch light.

Good to know TB- will have to pick up the Traveller core book as well.

I'm very pleased with Mongoose's Traveller myself, as a matter of fact. :)

Yep, Mongoose always has errata issues, but I have yet to see them have an errata list for any of their books comparable to lists I have seen some 800 LBS gorilla companies in the RPG business still have on a regular basis. ITs a good thing they have such awesome digital support of their products so no one has to buy their books.

It's also worthwhile to regularly check out Mongoose's Runequest II section of their forum. The traffic is relatively light, compared to EnWorld. ;)

Signs of problems + complaints along with some workarounds concerning the newer Runequest II books, show up relatively quickly. The head MRQ2 designer posts and answers questions there almost every day.

Right. I wanted to avoid a potential "echo chamber" effect, however, where mostly the people who are already fans of the game, enough at least to post on its dedicated forum, would give their input about it. Gives only one side of the story, if you see what I mean. ;)

At this point I'm waiting for the MRQ2 Glorantha setting book, before making any decisions about picking up any further Mongoose Runequest II books. If it turns out to have too many problems (ie. editing, etc ...), I may very well end up skipping over most of the MRQ2 supplement books.

On the Mongoose MRQ2 forums, there's already been some major complaints about the new MRQ2 Arms & Equipment book, and to a lesser extent the new Monster Coliseum + Necromantic Arts books.

I'm still somewhat leery about Mongoose from their past reputation dating back to the d20 glut era.

Nevertheless, the core MRQ2 rulebook looks like a lot of effort was put into it. I don't know if the same can be said about the MRQ2 supplement books already released so far.

The cool thing is if you read the errata thread you will see that most, if not all, of everything legitimate brought up is in the errata document posted up earlier in this thread, by me and one other even earlier, so even though they made mistakes, they are pretty on the ball about addressing them and getting corrections out in PDF.

Well, keep the compalining in perspective. There was a lot of complaints about the core rule book too, but if you look at the errata I linked to earlier, its only 3 pages, with tons of white space and large print, so not much.

People on the net definitely tend to make errata issues sound like the game is broken, and believe me such claims were made about the RQ2 core rule book, but if you read the errata, nothing in there is game breaking. Not even close. Probably their biggest blunder was the wind rules.
