Going to GenCon Indy for the first time

One thing I should mention that happened last year.

If you pre-purchased your badge and want to go in and pick it up BUT there is a huge line out the door on THU morning...pop inside and see if there is a different (much smaller) line for pick-ups only. I wasted over a half hour of standing in the wrong line because there wasn't any good information posted outside.

I booked my hotel! Finally!

I'm booked in at the Residence Inn by Marriot on the canal, less than half a mile from the Convention Centre. I've walked around in the US in the summer before, and I'm confident that even in August heat I can manage that each day. :)

Let's not talk about the cost, eh? Serves me right for not getting it done before.

So, what other hotels are people booked in at? Anyone at this one with me? Also, don't forget to go to the GenCon forum and organise games. Mustrum, there's a couple of GenCon newbies games already.

C'mon August!

Mariot... I am thinking whether that was my hotel too, or not. The name is familiar. I have to check at home.

On this...Will Call is open on Wednesday until 9 PM, so you can pick up your badges then.

I stayed there the first year I went to Indy. Not a bad place at all. You just need to leave an extra fifteen or twenty minutes in the morning for the walk. Make some time to walk along the canal, too. Very nice, indeed.

That sounds like a very nice amount of time for an early morning bit of exercise. And walking along the canal is absolutely something I'll find time to do.

Matt, when would be a good time for Og! ? I have plenty of open time so I imgaine your schedule is more full then mine. :D

I need to get my schedule organised. I'm attending the Ennies (although I haven't checked if I need to buy a ticket for that or if I can just turn up, whoops), I'm on the Ennies booth Thurs 2 - 4 pm, playing BSG Saturday night, and playing in a game Fri 2 - 6pm. Also playing in Rel's game when he decides when it's on, and planning on running an Esoterrorists game at some point (need to decide and put up details). So I'm free any morning at the moment if you're up for running it then? Og is fairly easy to play so a morning game should be OK.

If you are in on Wednesday, take the time to walk arount the convention center to get a lay of the land, this will allow you to find your games quicker, I zone my maps.

I am in on Wednesday and I will be wandering over to the convention centre to scope it out. I'm also looking to find something going on Weds night to kick off my GenCon experience with a bang!

Given Hand of Evil reckons I can pick my badge up the day before, hopefully I can avoid the problem entirely. :)

There is more than one Marriot in Indianapolis, unfortunately. Still, fingers crossed.

Thank you!

You don't need a ticket to the ENnies (unless they changed it) but take your badge. Thursday and Friday Morning I'm running 1e D&D. I'm going to go with a Saturday 10am start time.

I went to GenCon in 2007 and almost made that mistake as well. I pre-paid and had my 4 day pass FedEx'ed to me. I got there at 10am on Thursday and the line was halfway around the convention center. Thankfully, I asked the guy in front of me about the line. He saw my pass and laughed and pointed to the front of the convention center. Lucky for me I just walked up to the front, grabbed my swag bag and walked right it. :p

Man, do you guys have wives (bosses)? Mine is often jealous enough of my weekly gaming, let alone a week long trip to another country (for you. for me, Indianapolis might as well be).

I'm very envious of you all, and hope you try not to rub it in much for those of us unable to go...

Jay
Yes, my wife and I both game and so do both of our kids:) As a matter of fact, we are all DMing for True Dungeon again this year (the wife, the youngest and I all work in the warehouse during the year, our son is going to college in Maryland so GenCon is kind of a family reunion). It's all about geeking out the wife, dude. ;)

I had that problem with Wife 1.0. Now I don't. Wife 2.0 lets me go to Gencon in another country -- with zero grief.
Wife 2.0 even games with us, too.

If 360 days of the year you are at Home base - seems to me that 5 days of the year isn't that much to ask for, or, if needs be, insist upon.

Life's short.

Just sayin'.
