I was reading this thread and noticed what you said about Maptools.
I've been using Maptools for several years now. It really isn't difficult to use; most of the complexity is optional. For example, I don't use the lighting/line of sight stuff -- I just unmask the parts of the dungeon that I think they'd be able to see as they move.
You definitely want to import maps from PDFs rather than drawing your own, though. I would think that , if PDFs are available for the WLD maps, Maptools would actually be ideal, and really easy.
I've always thought it would be fun to play WLD. I'm not certain that I have the time for a Thursday game that will last for years , but I'd enjoy subbing in for a session sometime!
