The tendency of social networking software to use the term "friends" for a linkage that doesn't have anything to do with real friendship is one of the major failings of designers of such systems, IMHO.

Actively solicit friends instead of just waiting for people to add you to their lists. That's how I built my list; I went proactive instead of passively waiting for requests.
