I only used a mimic once and went with the bog-standard chest. I thought they were just dumb dungeon monsters, and was surprised when I saw the MM gave it a 10 Int and ability to speak Common. I had it act insulting toward the party to goad them into killing it, but they decided to spare it. Ha, good-aligned adventurers; that mimic was sitting on a hidden compartment containing a +1 ring of protection.
Btw I don't see why I'd have to have an outhouse instead of a toilet. There was a . . . peculiar article by Ed Greenwood describing how this works in the Realms and some of the richer estates in the North had toilets (which were scented and essentially ended in a bowl that had to be cleaned and replaced regularly by the servants) and even toilet paper (vinegar-soaked towels). You don't but a outhouse is great for some adventures (just for show and hides a tunnel in and out - something to hide behind, etc.) In buildings, it is a water closet.

In Unearthed Arcana, I've used Mimics as computers, cars, a manhole with a cover, an ATM, and a coke machine dispenser.

Hmmm... now I want to use a Mimic as a toy stand in a store.
