They may have "a thick body and the hairless, leathery hide of a walrus" but I think their general shape is more "dog like", at least that's how I interpret the description. Something like a Newfoundland dog with blubbery skin.

A male Newfie is about 28" at the shoulder, 42-45" long and weighs 150-175 pounds. Scaling that up to 6 feet long I get ... 600-700 pounds!

So 600 pounds is certainly possible, and there's the SRD Pony as precedent for a Medium-sized pack animal weighing over the Medium-size upper weight limit of 500 lb.

However, they've got longer tails than a Newfie (with a spike on the end!) which would likely be included in the original's total length. That'll make the rest of the body smaller and thereby lighter.

How about making them 3 foot at the shoulder? That should make them weigh about 400 lbs if they're build like Newfoundlands, including an extra 25-80 lbs for the sturdy tail and some blubber.

"A kupuk is 6 feet long and stands 3 feet tall at the shoulder, it weighs 400 pounds."

Anyone wanna buy a used pack animal? :p

Updated.

Since they are used as pack animals, we ought to include carrying capacity (and possibly a training section).

A Str 16 Medium quadruped has light loads up to 114 lb, medium loads of 115-229 lb, and heavy loads of 230-345 lb.

I'd say probably just allow training as any magical beast. That doesn't need a separate section, does it?

Yes, since it says they're friendly and easily domesticated we should have their training DCs as regular Animals, without the usual +5 for Magical Beasts.

As for carrying capacity, they work out up to 114 lbs for a light load, 115 to 230 lbs for Medium, and 231 to 345 lbs for a heavy load.

I had 229.5 lb as the upper end of Medium; don't you always round down in D&D?

I'm ok with stating they can be trained as animals. I guess we should come up with a price. They should be worth less than a hippogriff, I think, since they can't fly. Young are worth 1000 gp and training costs 750 gp?

I added 50% to the Str 16 heavy encumbrance range of 154-230, which gives 231-345 lbs, and presumed the Medium encumbrance ends a pound lighter than the heavy begins.

That's a total cost of 1,750 gp, which seems a little high. They aren't enormously better than a heavy warhorse and can't be ridden.

I was thinking more 1000 gp plus 500 gp training.

500 gp training was another option I had, so that's fine too.

Ahh, I thought I'd gotten 230 for 1.5*154, but I think I got 229.5 for the upper end of medium load, rounded down, and took 230 for heavy. Might as well use your numbers and just round up on the medium load.

That suits me.
