Nagol had some good maths above.
I do disagree with 2.5 pieces of gems per pound, however.
Using the mysterious metric system (on an undisclosed island somewhere within international waters) I found this pound to carat conversion:
Pound to Carat Conversion - Convert pound lb to carat ct - Weight Metric Conversion
1 lb = 2267.962 Carats
Added up, the 10 largest diamonds in the world are:
Crazytopics: 10 Largest Diamonds in the World
Just about a pound.
I'd say that once you throw gems in there...the answer is "whatever monetary amount you want."
