It'd be even more fun to have players make their own mixed CDs, and to have action resolution be tied to the song going on. Imagine each player making a list of 20 songs, and having the group put their combined playlist on shuffle, and to have skill checks be based on whether there's a bass solo going on, or a drum solo, or how many times in the next twenty seconds the singer screams (or whatever).
AWESOME idea.
In fact, it might help fit to the "genre" category. Perhaps, in genre, there is a list of 5 song "types" that typify it. e.g. for Metal: the ballad, the super-fast-slash, the guitar solo, etc. Each player picks one song for each and the rules are tied to type (allowing for players to customize which song they like, but have rules for "ballad").
EDIT: I just read up on Umlaut: Game of Metal, and discovered, from a poster at Cvircus Maximus:
In Umlaut: Game of Metal you don't play as a specific band member. Rather, each player creates an entire band and you're competing against each other. At the end of the game, the winner is decided based on the fanbase stat (which represents how popular and successful the band is) and the hope stat (which represents how confident and optimistic a band is).
While I think that could be a fun game to play (and I might buy it because it does seem fun), what I'm looking for is not an RPG that focuses on the "success of the band". In fact, I kind of don't care about band success or not (except perhaps as one of many motivating factors). I'd much rather see the goal being adventure resolution with players really getting into the individual roles of each rockstar.
