Help Get Me Fired Up For Traveller!

Whizbang Dustyboots

Gnometown Hero
Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me.

Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me.

Leave the men where they lay
They'll never see another day
Lost my soul, lost my dream
You can't take the sky from me.

I feel the black reaching out
I hear its song without a doubt
I still hear and I still see
That you can't take the sky from me.

Lost my love, lost my land
Lost the last place I could stand
There's no place I can be
Since I've found Serenity

And you can't take the sky from me.

Very nice write up Dustyboots.

I started watching Firefly on Netflix, and that (and the replies in this thread) has really gotten me excited to play.

In the first episode of Firefly Wash tells the crew and passengers "Hold on travelers!" before accelerating away from the space hulk. Sounds like a direct nod to Traveller to me.

I'm making a library list of book suggestions from this thread, so I should have plenty of reading material for a while.

My short "appendix N" for traveller:

Television:
  • Firefly (has anyone mentioned this? ;) )
  • Farscape
  • Star Trek: The Original Series (as regards to space navies... leave ST tech at the door.)
  • Babylon 5

Movies:
  • Aliens
  • Outland
  • Pitch Black

Books:
  • Ringworld
  • Mote in God's Eye
  • Starship Troopers (note the omission of movie by same name)

Gah. I think I need to load up some Firefly episodes and do something of a marathon. Because, well, Firefly is awesome.

Much of what has been said. More obliquely:

For the vile dregs of humanity, I'd recommend the Deadwood TV show. Then again, I think everyone should watch this show, as it contains All Wisdom (TM).

For spacefaring tally-ho! I'd actually recommend the Horatio Hornblower books. The whole point of space opera combat is that it is an analogue of the age of sail.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. For pacing. Ancient artifacts + ruthless militaristic regime is also very much in the Traveller vein.

The Thing. Cool movie.

Event Horizon. The spaceships look cool, and they've got g-tanks.

Space 1999. Lame? Maybe, but they have an adventure every week.

Blake's 7. Really.
