Adventure: A paladin in need (DM:Someone, judge: THB)

The Silver Starling takes another step forward and shrieks defiance again. This time her upthrust dagger conjures a shaft of gleaming sunlight that pierces through the cloud of bugs, illuminating an area near the bug mage with an almost blinding light. The mage's corpse seems almost to melt in the bright light, and falls near Brenwar's feet. After a moment, the radiance fades, but leaves a lingering glow around the enemies, making their movements clear even through the bug cloud.

[sblock=actions]Move: to J13
Standard: Sun's Illumination. Burst 1 on K3. Targets reflex (and area attack ignores concealment): Crit vs bug mage, 19 vs. legionary 2. The bug mage takes 28 radiant (not including vulnerabilities) and slides to K2 and is knocked prone. The burst area (J2 to L4) becomes a zone of piercing light until end of my next turn (sustain minor). I get +2 insight and perception vs. creatures in the zone, and enemies there grant CA. I can move it 3 squares with a move action.

Side note: as a result of character review comments, my damage bonus has gone up from +9 to +10 with arcane powers. No point in a retcon unless you really want to, but I thought I should explain why my damage rolls have suddenly changed. :)

You continue concentrating your efforts on the large skeleton and it’s nearby allies. A large flash rocks the zone, disintegrating masses of flies and sending the bug-covered undead, badly seared, flailing it’s arms in panic and falling just at Brenwar’s feet, who used the distraction to pass under the giant’s legs and, on his way, strike at it with all his might. The skeleton, half blinded by the flash, can’t find where the paladin is.

As the mage hurries to flee away from the painful the last undead, who also was caught in the blast but just keeps on his (almost literally) last leg, stumbles forward to strike at Brenwar, but he’s protected by unearthly powers and the sword shatters before harming the champion. Indifferent to this miracle, the corpse just picks up another weapon from the ground.

Meanwhile at the rearguard the two wights surge forward like ghosts from behind the rocks or the inside of the cloud of flies, run at their targets, strike swiftly and slip away with some rasping, snorting sounds that you interpret as laughs. Halleck and Joy fall on their knees as they fight to catch air. Or in Halleck’s case, flies.

[sblock=actions]
Joy move, uses Misdirected mark against minion, fails to hit

Brenwar moves out of the Plage Cloud’s area of effect drawing an AoO that fails, successfully hits the skeleton for 14 after spending his Heroic Effort power.

Halleck uses canon of avoidance on Brenwar, hits wight 1 despite it having cover from bushes and/or rocks, moves.

Porphyria moves slightly, blasts the mage badly but fails to hit the minion.

Large skeleton fails to recharge his big blow, so it just keeps pounding on Brenwar. Pathetic roll of 18 isn’t going to do much good however.

Last minion draws his sword, steps towards Brenwar and barely hits with a roll of 27, deleting 7 of his THP and marking him again. If you have a +1 to AC I didn’t register, he didn’t touch you.

Bug-Mage gets up, fails to recharge Unholy Vitality, shifts to current position, Sustains zone and moves it to current position.

Wight 2 repeats strategy; charges Halleck and rolls a 26 VS AC, dealing 8 damage and erasing yet another HS. Then shifts away and moves to D3.

Wight 1 does the same (they have speed 7) this time against Joy. Hits AC 28 despite penalty, deals 9 damage, wipes one surge, shifts away and moves.

The masked girl concentrates, and the remains of the sunbeam shifts slightly, outlining Brenwar and a portion of the large skeleton. Her dagger goes skyward again, and another starfall lands near the skeleton, but fails to significantly harm the being.

[sblock=actions]Minor: sustain
Move: move the zone one square NW, so it's centered on J2
Standard: blazing starfall, burst 1 on I3. 15 vs. reflex misses the skeleton.

Also: charge/shift/retreat? Is that a special thing? I thought charging ended your turn, usually. Not trying to rules lawyer, just making sure I understand what's going on .

OOC: Oops, you're right. if I ever saw the "no further actions" clause in the Charge section I forgot about it. Let's correct it: Wight 1 is actually at G7 and wight 2 at
H4

Brenwar unleashes a flurry of blows on the skeleton leaving scorching marks across its bones as his divine power flows through the hammer.
[sblock=Combat]
Quick Note about the minion's damage last turn. I have Resist 1 from my armor so I think I should have 9 THP.

Action Point: Virtuous Strike vs. Large Skeleton (1d20+10=26, 1d10+5+3=16)
This normally gives radiant vulnerability, but I'm not sure it stacks so not worrying about it (Though would like a ruling for future reference).

Standard Action: Majestic Halo vs. Large Skeleton (1d20+10=22, 3d10+5=29)
(My attack: +2 for CA, -2 for Marked)+(Its AC: +2 for Concealment) =MISS
Damage= 16 radiant (Didn't include vulnerability, did include Pelor's Blessing)
End of Encounter: All enemies that start their turn adjacent to Brenwar are Divine Sanctioned.

If the large skeleton is dead:
Move Action: Shift to K2
Minor Action: Divine Challenge the Mage

At Halleck's call, Joy danced across the field, moving to attack the nearer wight. An errant tendril of the bug-cloud swirled out as she swung, spoiling her aim.

OOC: corrected from last round: wight’s positions, Brenwar’s hit points

I can’t find a quote, but I’d say I saw somewhere that vulnerabilities and resistances don’t stack, so we’ll go with that ruling unless someone else with better rules-fu finds something official.

The battle goes on. Brenwar holds his ground against assault on all sides, and the constant battering on his shield and armor are taking it’s toll, and the paladin is starting to feel tired. With supreme effort, he smashes again on the gigantic skeleton’s frame and crushes most of the upper body structure. Now the undead beast has only one arm, but even then it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop fighting.

At the rearguard one of the wights finally realizes Porphyria’s thread and runs at her, full speed, coming over the mound. She too tastes the cold touch of death, and the wights surround her position, waiting for another opportunity to strike. The other wight is fooled by Halleck, who expertly feints drawing it’s attention, allowing Joy to strike several times. Her aim is spoiled by the cloud of flies, but at least forces the undead abomination to stumble away with ungainly steps, much different to the agile strides it’s capable of.

[sblock=actions]
Porphyria fails with blazing starfall, moves zone.

Brenwar attacks twice with the help of an action point, deals 16 damage. The skeleton (and the mage) look nearly destroyed.

Joy moves, attacks wight, fails to hit.

Halleck sustains his AC bonus on Brenwar, then shifts and gains bonuses to defenses by doing so, then successfully hits for 7 damage. Wight obligues with his MBA, but with the still going penalty and hefty bonuses to Halleck’s defenses he’s unable to connect despite rolling quite well. Joy takes her AoO (I took the liberty to roll it) but again fails to hit the wight.

Bug mage fails to recharge Unholy Vitality, looks for shelter among the bushes and targets Porphyria with his Blinding Cloud at will. Luckily for her, he fails her Fort defense by just 1. Finally Sustains and moves the cloud of flies.

Wight 2 moves, climbing the mound and charges Porphyria; his movement is high enough to allow him do so. Hits AC 24, deals 6 damage and vaporizes one of her surges. Since it hit, it can shift 3 squares to where it’s now.

Wight 1 attacks Joy, failing to hit this time, then shifting 1 square this time with his move action.

Large skeleton attacks Brenwar, finally rolls well and hits AC 30, dealing 10 damage. Substracting one from Brenwar’s resistance, this means he’s out of THP. Shifts south with move action.

The last undead attacks Brenwar too, crits for 6 damage after resistance, marks the paladin again. Shifts SE with move action.

My damage should be higher I think,
My daily should have done 16 radiant for its miss effect, and the at will should of hit for 16 radiant also (sorry, forgot to specify that on the at-will).
