I think I might be a creepy older gamer

It is only bad if you don't recognize them as impure thoughts, or if you act upon them.:)

What is this, the "Wise Sayings of Torquemada, Grand Master of Termight Day"?

Remember:

"Sleep is No Refuge for Impure Thoughts!"

and:

"Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave!"

I wouldn't worry about the creepiness.

My first reaction would be to join in order to be supportive. There are often fewer female gamers and supporting one at an early stage of game development could be great. The fact that it is a young gamer is also great, because I would feel like passing the rpg torch on to the next generation would be awesome. I want the games to live on!

My second reaction would be, no way am I committing the time to a game where I'm an old man with a bunch of young kids, and will feel like an outsider, and probably not enjoy the game as much as I might a different game. I would wonder if I would be able to submit totally to the will of a less experienced teen DM. But I actually never have problems with that so I'm sure I would, but it might feel strange. Being older would they expect me to know more about the rules and game? Would I inhibit their form or style?

The third thought I would have is that I could try it once to be supportive and then back out if I didn't find it worth my time. That being said I hate quitting, and would have a hard time backing out. Usually once I commit to something I'm in. But that's probably my own personal issue.

if your instincts are telling you it's a bad idea, it's probably best to listen to them.

True of most situations in life.

If you're willing to play "the wrong edition" (however you define that) just to play with her, then it's certainly wrong. :)

Yeah, I'll never forget my slow slide into dissolution with that disco dollie from back east. At the end of it, I was drowning in my own slime. And it all started with a friendly game of Champions: The New Millenium (FUZION edition)...

I was in a new store the other night as referenced here and whilst asking the store clerk about running or participating in D&D games, a gamer-geek girl standing at the counter in her school uniform piped up that I should join her D&D game at the store on Sundays.
I was going to say it couldn't hurt to play once a store. It's not like the world would end or anything. But now I'm thinking about what weekend is coming up and so, don't do it. The world COULD end.

Split the difference. Find out when her game is and hang out at the store awhile that day. That way you can scout out the group and the type of game they play.
