Why yes, that is an Airship in my pocket...

Thanks for all the input guys! While I'm not currently in a place in any of my campaigns as a PC to use this, I'm keeping the idea in my back pocket (terrible pun intended), like my concept for raising Rust Monsters or magically building my own fortress. As a DM, I'd enjoy introducing an item like this for my players, and making their lives adventurously dangerous as a result.

hmmm, i think the sail could be applied to the large version of the boat with no issues.

the keel seems to be designed to be an attachable object, given that the keel of the boat is the largest part of the frame on the bottom, and the part to which all the other parts are attached and built upon. to replace a keel, one would literally have to disassemble the entire boat... which i do not get the impression is the intent of the item.

so i would conclude that the keel should have to be built into the item from the get-go, or it should be attachable. magic items frequently can size themselves, so if the keel can attach, perhaps it should be able to gain the shrinking abilities. perhaps quietly take the cost of the extra ability (from the dmg / mic for adding abilities to an item) out of the treasure they find for the next few portions of the adventure so that they can get the cool ability and fun adventuring without having to foot the cost all at once or upfront.

you could even turn it into a plot hook, wizard will do the work in exchange for a few "minor" tasks that require the use of just such a craft....

those are my mechanical thoughts.

as far as story or plot goes?

i say banzai!!!

go for it, that is a great idea. make it work somehow. =D do remember the stronghold builders guidebook for ideas on turning the boat into a flying fortress or for souping up the boat in general.

the raising rust monsters was in module I-1 im working on that mod at the moment, its a tough conversion because of loss of spells and such, but like both concepts..

NOW for the original question for many of the reasons listed by others plus my own thoughts... it is a yes... not overpowering just a pain for DMs..

I am stillworking on making the original Rug of Welcome... I posted part of this in another thread...where I combined the present rug of welcome with a carpet of flying...the harder part is coming up with the shrink and conversion into metal... another thread on this perhaps...

Yyyeeaahhhhh

You're trying to merge three magical items. I would require the craft wonderous item feat to do this.

Since none of the items took slots in the first place I would make the cost of doing it low except for one thing: Weight. That keel is 1000#, that would need to be dealt with.

Thus my inclination would be to add one more requirement--the largest bag of holding. Maybe two weeks of work.

Alright, what about this, what if the Folding Boat was brought to the individual who could craft the Cloud Keel and the enchantment was placed upon the existing keep itself? Rather than making a separate one and adding it on.

Perhaps the same for the sail?
