When to throw Nish?

It is?

It seems no one knows that but you.

Well, now you know!

I googled it, and it's not on the first page. Or the second.

Hmm.... Let's see. I googled "AC" and "Crti" and "init", and I didn't get a lot on those, either.

Yet, we still use them, and we all know what they mean, eh?

Use it if you want, I honestly don't care. However, in terms of utility, you'll likely have to explain the term every time you use it, which renders it a less than useful term.

I have used it a lot--I use it when I speak of initiative, and I find that people understand what it refers to.

"Are you intentionally trying to get this term accepted into gamer vernacular?"

No agenda here. It's just a word I use for initiative. I like it. I've used it for decades. It's as comfortable to me as saying "DEX" or "AC" or "Crit" or "THACO" and other like gaming-related words.

So, when I speak initiative, I use nish. It's a hell of a lot easier to type than the full word "initiative" or even the shorten "init" that you bring up.

When I'm not speaking of initiative, I don't use it.

Well, first, thanks for an amicable response!

I'm not sure how your quote follows. Why is nish easier than init?

I also googled AC, Crit, and Init. The only useful term I got was for crit.

The first thing that comes up is Crit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , with definition 6 being critical hit in rpgs and computer and video games.

But when I googled the other terms along with "RPG", (as I did for "Nish")
For INIT: I got "initiative roller", "initiative tracker", "imp init for rogues" (a thread here) all on the first page.
For AC: two or three results on the first page of google referring to Armor Class
For CRIT: about 7/10 results on the first page of google referring to critical hits.
For Thac0: unsurprisingly 10/10 results on the first page of google referring to rpgs and Thac0

I get that you've made up a term to refer to initiative. I'm ok with that. My group has done similar things with other terms.

I think that you believe your term is much more ubiquitous than it is, and I think you're seeing the effects/results of that expectation, along with the effects/results of that expectation being incorrect.

It's (the term is) not awful.

But it's not universal, as you seem to think it to be.

Who am I? My name is Ish
On my hand I have a dish.
I have this dish to help me wish.
When I wish to make a wish
I wave my hand with a big swish swish.
Then I say, "I wish for Nish!"
And I get Nish right on my dish.
So...
If you wish to make a wish,
you may swish for Nish with my Ish wish dish.

There's just something fishy about the word Nish WaterBob. If nothing else, Dr Seuss would love you dearly.

The irony here is that Ish actually wishes for fish.

Fishy indeed.

For me, "nish" is much easier to type.

I get that you've made up a term to refer to initiative.

I did not make up the term. I heard another player use it, long, long ago. It stuck.

But it's not universal, as you seem to think it to be.

No, a lot of people haven't heard it. That's been obvious just on this board.

But, I've been using it for at least 20 years, and I've occassionally heard other players use it and seen it on forums--here and there.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust a man that uses the word "nish".

He may say that the "critted" an enemy, or "googled" a term on the net....called the internet the "net"....spoke of "THACO" and "DEX" and "Ref" saves. Rolled a twelve sider. "Ran" a game. "Ran" a thief. And, put some players through a module, all the while playing RAW.

But, shiit, if he uses the word "nish", God help him.

That's over the line.

For whatever reason, it rubs me the wrong way too. I think it's that it's a bit precious, like when people say 'lock instead of warlock. If something sounds so nerdy that folks on a site like this instinctively want to beat you up and steal your lunch money, you've achieved something! :)

One more thing: your attempts to have this term enter the vernacular by starting multiple threads with the word front-and-centre are a wee bit transparent. If you want to have it catch on, plant the seed, then stand back. If it grows, it grows. At this point, though, you may have over-watered it.

I expect part of the reaction runs hand in hand with rejection of the degradation of language that accompanies text messages and 140-character status updates.
