Is 5th Edition a Real Thing?

...Or is it something they're now calling Pathfinder or other razz'ma'tazz? I keep hearing about 5th Edition, but I have no idea what it is!

No, it's not.

There is a lot of speculation about 5th edition, primarily because of a series of recent articles about the history of D&D and design philosophy by Mike Mearls.

There's also some speculation because Pathfinder seems to be doing really well, and there's some question about how well 4e is doing (many think it's doing great, some think it is underperforming) and whether or not it may be drawing close to the end of its lifecycle.

All speculation at this point.

5th edition is pure speculation, the motives for this speculation varies and it has been going on for some time. The latest bout has been triggered by the articles Mike Mearls is posting in Dragon.

It's just speculation at this point.

... there's some question about how well 4e is doing (many think it's doing great, some think it is underperforming)...

Of course, both of these may be true - it could be selling spectacularly well by the standards of any other RPG company and still not be meeting the targets WotC want to set for it.

I hope they don't push for 5e. I never transitioned to 4e, but I know some people put a lot of money into the new books and I believe it would spark some harmful edition rage.

5e is the dirge being played while the body on the cart is saying 'I'm not dead yet. I think I'm going to recover! I feel happy! I feel happy!'

Honestly, I think 4e has a few more years left, it is only if some folks at WotC get panicky that a club will be applied, upside the head.

Mind, if 4e dies this young then I doubt that 5e would be long for this world. :erm:

The Auld Grump

I hope they don't as well. I've sunk enough money into 4e, and quite frankly me and my gaming crew love the system. The fact that character creation and monster design has been ported (officially and unofficially) to a program really makes it shine.

I remember character creation, especially higher level creation, taking forever... especially since I'm not very good at math. Some people had it down and that made me feel worse about not knowing exactly how character builds work. Was it wrong I only wanted one or two classes followed by one prestige class? I didn't think so. But I tended to see, particularly on roleplaying sites lie rpol.net, combinations like Fighter2/Rogue3/Barbarian1/PrestigeA3/PrestigeB5. Of course, they didn't really care about how little sense that made, they just wanted the ability to rage, the extra feat, ability to backstab and then whatever the hell those obscure prestige classes gave them only at those topmost levels. It drove me crazy!

(And by the way, I totally said 'Razz'ma'tazz' in one of my rpol.net posts (can't remember if it was in a game or in the Community Chat. By chance, and I playing or chatting over there with you, Agamon?)
