Pathfinder 1E Could Pathfinder take D&D's place...

It's not doing fine here Dannager. Our nights are packed to capacity and there's crickets congregating on theirs...

I'm sorry to hear that. I wish Pathfinder had that level of enthusiasm around here.

Are you really trying to classify D&D Encounters as an Organized play program, like PFS, LFR, LGH, etc?!

Yes.

It's not even close.

Because you say so, but that's pretty much it.

The only confusion here, is your assumption that my statements are blankets covering all parts of the country. Sadly, they do not. This is representative of my region alone...

No, I just wanted to make it clear that, contrary to what some might have taken from your description, WotC has some very active, very popular organized play programs running. That's all. I'm trying to avoid the further spread of misinformation, and I'm sure you're not trying to stand in the way of that.

Aye. I still think 3.5 is the best version out there, Pathfinder is nice for me precisely because of the compatibility.

That was me when I started Pathfinder, now I only play Pathfinder, and now rule all 3x books not usable in our games - its Pathfinder only.

well based on what I saw at the penny arcade expo (which is a primarily video game con) WOTC dominated for number of tables but the lines were short if they existed at all. Pazio had less table space but you always had to wait a few min for a demo. I think that makes it close to even. Pathfinder needs time to build the brand (video games, tv shows, whatever) but based on the production value I would say they have good shot of eventually been #1.

I've been seeing this thread for a while, and have tried to ignore it, but it seems to keep popping to the top of the pile. So...

Could Pathfinder take D&D's place...of being the number one RPG game in the world?

Yes, I think it could. Though I also think it's just as likely that it won't.

But I think there's a much more important question:

Does it matter if it does?

Why is this so important to some that Pathfinder "beats" D&D? Why is it just as equally important to others that 4E remain on top? Will it really have any impact at all on the support that WotC and Paizo provide their games? Does anyone really believe that the survival of their game is in doubt? Or is this just a need to win that's so strong, people are willing to be rude, divisive, angry, insulting, and counterproductive to do so?

Then for both of those who wish to see their game "Win", I say this:

"A Pox on both your houses!"

4E is D&D. Pathfinder is D&D. Or more accurately, both are editions of D&D. No different than OD&D, BD&D, BECMI, AD&D, AD&D 2E, D&D 3E, and D&D 3.5E are D&D.

So what if Pathfinder starts outselling 4E...what difference does it make? Would it matter if OD&D started outselling both? Would it matter if AD&D made a resurgance as the most popular edition? They're all D&D, and they're all RPG's, and they're all FUN. 4E is a significantly different game from the other editions, and has become the preferred flavor for many players - and that's a good thing. They are playing the game they find fun. Just as the people playing Pathfinder are playing the game they find fun.

Unless someone is being forced to play a version or game that they don't want to (unlikely), then we can assume that most everyone is playing the game or edition that they like.

AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS!

Why don't we all just give up this nonsense once and for all, and go play the game we like?:erm:

Then come back here and talk about playing the game we like...rather than talking about all the games we don't like.

I think its interesting that the market is changing in such a way that D&D might not be the 800 lbs gorilla forever. Its good to see Paizo doing so great with their 'new' game.

Does it matter? I don't think so. I just find it interesting.

The answer to the last question is duh. Successful lines are going to have more support. Unsuccessful lines are going to have less support. How many games have really keep going for a decade? Two? The best way to make sure we have a 3.x-style version of D&D in a decade is that Pathfinder poses a serious challenge to spot #1 and stays there.

Except for one major thing you're overlooking: neither 4E nor Pathfinder need to "beat" the other to be considered successful. All that matters is that they make money. Period!

Play what you like. Talk about what you like. Leave the stuff you don't like to those that do.

It's really that simple.

Cheers.

The market for D&D is not suddenly going to grow a whole lot, nor is the amount of money people spend or the amount of time people spending gaming. To a first approximation, it's a zero-sum game.

Talk about what you like.

But you're complaining about the fact that I am. I find 4E versus Pathfinder much more interesting then arguing about whether the Perception skill covers too much ground.

...it's a zero-sum game.

Wrong.

But you're complaining about the fact that I am. I find 4E versus Pathfinder much more interesting then arguing about whether the Perception skill covers too much ground.

Wrong again.

You're talking about what you like versus what you don't like. You are not just talking about what you like.

Talk about what you like means go talk about your game. Go talk about your gaming experiences, talk about what you like about your game, share your houserules, talk about what you liked from another game and want to see in your game, etc., etc. - and stop talking bad about or trying to beat someone else's game.

There's a quote that's gone around these boards a bit (I believe it was Umbran's), and goes something like this:

I dare you to show me how cool your game is, without once comparing it to another game.

Maybe give it a try.

Cheers and Happy Gaming.
