Honoring Pit Traps

Pitfalls are a STAPLE of D&D

That said, i can´t remember the module, but i have been always fond of the hole in the ceiling with a "reverse Gravity" under it.

Oh, and Grimtooth Traps are one of my favorites, when my old schoolfriends and I get together for an "do you remember the old times" weekend, and i can dish out some random death during pointless dungeoncrawling :)

Oh, don't forget the Portable Hole Pit Trap (a cartoon farvorite) or the Bag of Holding Pit Traps. And always beware of the mimic that covers a pit with itself, talk about having the rug pulled from under you!

My favorite pit trap was the one in Secret of the Slavers Stockade. It had a wire over the far end so anyone over 4' tall who jumped over it was pushed back into the pit. Fond memory's of my brother's Character getting spiked after the Halfling made the jump.

A couple from Grimtooth: The normal pit with an invisible wall half way across, and the normal pit in 2' high corridor.

From an adventure (Axe of the Dwarvish Lords, but I've seen it in others): The pit traps which can take the weight of a goblin, but not a human

What are the most iconic or memorable *published* pit traps in D&D history?

Sad to say my PC is in one. Along with the rest of party. It's the Keep on the Borderlands, but it's the revolving floor one in the Shrine of Elwyn. I'm pretty sure that differentthan the kobold one.

Stupid half-orc had to ring all the bells!

Bullgrit

I'd say the most *infamous* pit trap is the one at the entrance to the sample adventure (The Haunted Keep) in the Moldvay basic set. Just about every party I've played through that adventure has lost their thief (d4 hp, 10% chance to detect traps) to that pit (covered, d6 damage).

I'm shocked at the missing teleporting, infinite free fall pit in one of the Desert of Desolation modules (I3-5) where you not only slam into one another a terminal velocity but there's also a couple mummies in free with you. Nothing cranks up a pit trap like mummy rot. :)
