D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 Rapid Shot and two-weapon fighting

First Post
Firstly I know it is ridiculous but say a character held two hand crossbows (two-weapon Fighting) and has Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting and Improved Rapid Shot.

Does this mean that said character gets five attacks per weapon on a full-attack action? (for a total of ten attacks per turn)

That is a hurdle I may have to overcome, I was thinking a returning hand crossbow might work but I haven't looked into that part

My main questions are 1) does Two-weapon Fighting feat include ranged weapons or are they melee only

2) can I use Two-weapon Fighting with Rapid Shot to gain five attacks

3) could I not use Rapid Reload feat (how many free actions does a player get a turn)

...ISM

I think that picture is ridiculous...a Chainsaw in D&D :P

I know it is extreme but if the rules allow it, why not?

EDIT: It isn't immediately obvious (at least not to me) that that is a picture of a Munchkin

Yes, you can. It's extremely feat intensive, you'll basically need fighter levels and possibly flaws to get everything you want in reasonable time. Keep in mind you also want the entire archery feat tree (PBS, Precise and Rapid Shot, Improved Precise Shot, Manyshot if you want Improved Rapid Shot...) on top of the TWF tree. AND, since hand crossbows do horrid damage, I'm assuming you're a rogue (also the only class proficient with them) relying on sneak attack. So you'll also want Hand Crossbow Focus (Drow of the Underdark) and Crossbow Sniper feats.

Sound imposing? We haven't even touched on items yet! Keeping up on two weapons enhanced is expensive, and you also, like all ranged rogues, need a ring of blinking in order to reliably get your sneak attack. And that's not even getting into the cost of a magic item to actually be able to reload the two and still fire both that turn. For that, you're basically looking at the grossly overpriced Glove of Storing...x2, cause you'll need one for each crossbow. If your DM is nice, he'll allow the Gloves of the Master Strategist from Ghostwalk which work just as well but are ~1/3 the price. Chances, are greater, however, he'll see your (in actuality extremely weak) build and think it's cheesy, and not be so cool. Oh, gloves is also the only slot you can get a dex bonus on if not using MIC, so you're going to be paying 1.5x for those gloves of storing. Hope your DM uses MIC!

...Have I made my point yet? Yes, you can do it. But it is very, very difficult to pull off well.

TWF is not limited to melee only. Thrown weapons are specifically included in the rules for Two-Weapon Fighting on page 160 of the 3.5 Player's Handbook. There's no reason projectile weapons should be excluded; however, most projectile weapons are two-handed weapons.

Rapid Shot and TWF do stack, so it is certainly possible.

You can use Rapid Reload to make reloading a hand crossbow a free action, and you can take as many free actions in a round as your DM will allow. But you still need two hands to reload it, so the question is: what are you doing with the crossbow in your left hand while you're reloading the crossbow in your right hand, and vice versa?

Vegepygmy, thanks for clearing that up

I understand everything there, what about a Returning weapon (it says it returns to your hand after being thrown) could it not include being "thrown" by the string of the crossbow and returning to the...shute (whatever you call where the bolt sits in a crossbow)

EDIT: never mind I just read the Returning effect and it specifically says "must be a throwing weapon" and "returns to the hand of the thrower before his next turn" so it couldn't work

Thanks very much for clearing that up so quickly
