Death traps through the editions

OD&D: You slip off the rope and fall in lava. You're dead.

1E AD&D: You slip off the rope, falling into lava. Save versus petrification or die.

2E AD&D: You enter a heated mountain vale that has resisted the penetration of explorers for centuries. Rumor has it that the stronghold of Izban the Undying lies hereabouts, and that within guarded by ta'narii of ancient evil lies the Orb of Cinnabon. You descend a rope into the valley, failing a Dex check and landing in lava. Save versus magic or die.

3E D&D: You climb down a hundred foot rope, entering the dungeon, but fail your climb check and land in lava. Make a Fort save or take ongoing Con damage until you die.

4E D&D: You climb down a rope into the dungeon, challenging both your athletic ability and knowledge of ropemaking, but as you fail three of five skill checks, you fall into lava and die. Make a saving throw to end this condition.

5E D&D: You have turned over the "lava" hazard card. Roll a save or play a "hazard avoidance" card or die.

6E D&D: You clicked on lava. Hit "A", then "B", then "A" again, or die.

8E: You fall into the lave and die. Return to the singularity to reflect upon the pain of the experience before assuming another randomly generated corporeal form.

1E AD&D: You slip off the rope, falling into lava. Save versus petrification or die.
Well played, Olgar Shiverstone, but I think the first-edition AD&D version would go more like this:

1E AD&D: You slip off the rope, falling into lava. Save versus... Hmm... I don't think hot lava is Paralyzation, Poison, or Death Magic. Maybe Petrification or Polymorph? It is hot rock. It's definitely not a Rod, Staff or Wand. Ooh, Breath Weapon! Yeah, it's kinda like dragon fire, right? 'Cuz it's not a Spell. I mean, maybe it was created with magic, but it's not a spell, per se... Just try to roll high.

Gotta spread some XP around Olgar. Nice list :)

58th Edition: The undifferentiated agency creates a Self. It creates a lava. It creates a Slipping and a Falling as mediums to create the Self in the Lava. It destroys the Self. It destroys the rest too.

∞E: (. . .) return through time to warn yourself not to climb down the rope yet you refuse to listen, fall in the lava, but activate the temporal reset in your cerebral interface so that you can return through time to warn yourself not to climb down the rope yet you refuse to listen, fall in the lava, but activate the temporal reset in your cerebral interface so that you can return through time to warn yourself not to climb down the rope yet you refuse to listen, fall in the lava, but activate the temporal reset in your cerebral interface so that you can return through time to warn yourself not to climb down the rope yet you refuse to listen, fall in the lava, but activate the temporal reset in your cerebral interface so that you can return through time to warn yourself not to climb down the rope yet you refuse to listen, fall in the lava, but activate the temporal reset in your cerebral interface so that you can return through time to warn yourself not to climb down the rope yet you refuse to listen, fall in the lava, but activate the temporal reset in your cerebral interface so that you can return through time to warn yourself not to climb down the rope yet you refuse to listen, fall in the lava, but activate the temporal reset in your cerebral interface so that you can (. . .)

10th edition:

A Nicolas Cage hologram will appear in the middle of the table.

Nicolas will be "acting" out the character's pain, as he is getting swallowed by lava.

For immersion purposes only.

Example:

(No, not the lava, not the lava!!! aghhhhh!!!! Not my legs!!!!! my legs!!!!!!aggghhhhh!!!!)

4.5E D&D: You fall from the rope, thus suffering from the condition Falling, save ends. If the party's warlord jumps, too, you'll enjoy a +1 modifier to your saves.
