If WotC Released D&D 3.75 Tomorrow....

If WotC released 3.75 I would hunt down the design staff and.... well, let's just say, I wouldn't be happy.

If they are interested in designing a game that is playable by everyone with rules that are non-campaign specific and are halfway enjoyable, I'm in. I was able to play along with 3.X, I wasn't with 4e. No hatred, just not my cup o' tea. If they were to regress at this point I would be suspicious of the true motives.

Okay, related but separate - If WotC came out with a 'Rules Light' version of D&D, somewhere between 3.5 and B E C M I (or Cyclopedia) would you be interested?

Again, 4e remains supported, full OGL, and solid support, etc..

I will start off by saying this would interest me more than a 3.75 - I think that Pathfinder fills that role, and fills it extremely well.

Assumptions:
1. Miniatures are supported, but play does not rely on them.

2. Sold as either a series of boxes, or as thin paperbound books, with a hardcover when all the sets in the line have come out.

3. Adventure creation very similar to B E C M I. You could run Keep on the Borderlands with it. A statblock covers about a inch on the page.

The Auld Grump

This sounds like a 2.75 to me or Castles & Crusades, which currently comes the closest to what I want out of D&D.

I think it's also important to consider not just what I would want from a new game but what new player would want. The two biggest choices right now are Pathfinder and 4E. Both of those games a too complex for most new players. Someone I know wanted to get a game going for her college friends. She didn't like the level of complexity of 4E or Pathfinder.

She liked C&C but didn't think enough players would want to buy books. I showed her 1E and games like Labyrinth Lord and Basic Fantasy RPG and she liked these for the price. She did seem a little disappointed that they weren't "official". In the end it seemed like there was no perfect solution.

Nope.

The game will need to be in the hands of a privately-held company before I will look at any new version of D&D the RPG ever again.

No, or at least not what I meant. 2e had its own complications, I was looking more at Basic and Expert D&D. :)

I have friends who still feel that the rules Cyclopedia was the best version of the game, liking it better than either edition of AD&D, and better than either 3.X or Pathfinder. (They play Pathfinder, but that is because Pathfinder is what I am running. They would love it if I were running Basic and Expert.)

They kind of like the Pathfinder Beginners box, but feel that is should have simplified further, and should be continued apart from Pathfinder Core. (A married couple, who met in a Basic D&D game while in high school. Their kids are in my Tweens 'n' Teens game.)

The Auld Grump, I've tried to steer them to C&C, but they still have their hardcover Cyclopedias....

WOTC releasing a 3.75 edition would be like Ford Motor Company releasing a "new" Ford Pinto, where the only changes are added spoilers and chrome. Of course in this scenario there would be a large number of people already driving a Pinto knockoff, insisting either that the changes to the air conditioner make it the best car ever, put that the exploding has tank is a feature that will never bother a good driver.

I'd be a bit annoyed at WOTC, but I suppose iy would make sense to take advantage of the 3.X Stockholm Syndrome. 3.x is a perfect example of how if you tell people something is good loud and long enough, they'll believe it's actually good, all evidence to the contrary.

And hell, WOTC could probably make a profit. After all, Transformers 2 raked in the money.

Mod Edit: More than a bit over the top, and pretty insulting. Let's have no more of this, folks. Thanks. ~Umbran
