What character type is this?

I am wondering what type character would this be for any setting or genre: a mortal possessed by a spirit of a certain type, be it demon, ghost or elemental? Something similar to Ghost Rider, the Demon, Devilman and other characters like this. Powers by possession is the trope term but I'm looking for the character type term besides possessed guy. D&D class the Binder is similar but looking for a different name and I thought there was a different name that. any suggestions?

Pathfinder has the Master Chymist Prestige Class. Technically it's more of alchemically-induced second persona, but I suppose one could flavour it as possession.

A Vessel, perhaps. Or an Avatar (Not technically accurate, but possible). A Client (in that the possessing power is a Patron).

A lot of afro-carribean faiths keep this idea alive very securely. Vodou, Candomble, Obeya, Santeria...people possessed by spirits are all part of that melieu.

Borrowing some terms and concepts from these faiths (at least as a base) might work. Usually in Hatian Vodou, the person being possessed is called the "Chwal" (literally, the horse), but you might also want to borrow the names of priests and priestesses (for Hatian Vodou, it's usually Houngan (male) or Mambo (female), other traditions have different terms).

The 3.5 Binder is, indeed, really close to these elements. For something vaguely similar, you might look at the 4e warlock, as it can certainly be ambiguous who is using who in that situation.

A sorcerer with levels in Acolyte of the Skin comes to mind.

A refluffed cleric (or paladin) might work as well; he is getting his abilities from "another being" whether it be a kami spirit, a demon, loa or whatnot.

I have another character idea for another setting for urban fantasy police investigation campaign. Think Law and Order: SVU and CI with a horror fantasy twist. The idea is there are ancient shadow creatures or agents of some entity or council of law and justice that has the ability to see into mortals souls and judge them if they were truly evil and they have the right (from a mortal's system of law) to take the the soul of criminal to their own court. Similar to Darksiders' War and Ghostrider the character. My question is what type of creatures would they from mythology or from any other source?

This is an idea I had for almost 3 years now and I think it's time to flesh it out some more.

Bwuh?

Anyway, you aren't clearly answering the important question to me - what does the posession do? In 4e I'd consider a Barbarian with flame-themed elemental rages. Or an ordinary pyromancer. Or an Infernal Warlock.

In other words, start at the effects of posession and work backwards.
