Another thing I used to do in addition to my name on the inside cover, was to put old school book covers on my "public use" books so I could spot mine amidst a heap.

(also so I could better hide my secret nerdom when in public. good GOD the 3rd ed books were freaking ugly...)

I have my Pathfinder Core Rulebook marked up with highlighter in a few spots, but primarily I have about twenty of those write-on plastic sticky tabs added for fast references. I've been a book collector in the past, but I guess I grew out of that. I've come to appreciate how office supplies can make my game better...

Also, I frequently use post-it notes to temporarily mark pages in my Bestiary, especially if I'm using more than one type of standard beastie in a combat. Two post-its make it really easy to flip back and forth between pages. I keep about a half-dozen of 'em stuck to the inside cover for this reason.

One of the ways that I fail at being a college student is that I refuse to mark up my textbooks. I just wasn't raised that way-- books were durable property to be cared for and passed on to others when we were done with them.

Luckily(Or not so luckily) I am the only player in my group of novices (I'm the DM) who owns any books... So no I do not have to mark my books... I am still trying to get everyone to grab their own set of dice...

I don't highlight the text. I use pencil to note monster hp, monsters killed in adventures, and many other sidenotes. I'll put my name in them, and I've used postits in my copy of Yggsburgh.

Upper_Krust is horrified that my copy of Legends & Lore has many of the deities crossed out, where they were killed in our campaign. The copy of Deities & Demigods (with Melnibone & Cthulu) he gave me one year is still pristine, though. :)

This. I also update all rulebooks manually whenever new Rule Updates are released.

I don't put my name in any books, though, because it's not necessary due to the above.

Hey S'mon! :)

These books were my holy texts growing up. Your writing on them was sacriligeous to me.

I still recall the horror when Allen Shiels bleeding forefinger left a one inch bloodstain across Bahamut's entry of my 1st Edition Monster Manual. What a dark day that was. :.-(

There is a tenth Hell for those who defile their books and probably an eleventh or twelth for those who dare defile mine!
