Need Suggestions for My City

Samloyal23

Adventurer
I'm working on a city that has mix of Greek and Egyption culture but a Renaissance level of tech, ruled by a minion of Set. Not a nice place to be unless you're an evil warlock. Looking for a better name than "Khem" and some suggestions on how to make dwarves fit better flavourwise. Also need a snake-like race that would make a good PC. Thoughts?

Thosia

At least that's the name of a city like that in my setting - basically it's a lot like Alexandria. Sort of sounds like Thoth, so has an Egyptian flavor.

Sixteen proto-Egyptian names to consider:

Neb-ates

Ankh-uterni i

Mesor Utunu

Shosnar

Psamor

Hormose

Ne-puhe Nahkaar

Tamatni Appi

Pa-en-ankh

Sekemes

Unaatimat

Sa-men-aa

Saenennub

Neerika

Kaor Ata-es

Pen-epsek-pi

This city needs lots of canals, gardens, temples, and administrative centers as well as a few fabulous monuments, oh, and don't forget the crcodiles...

This is really helpful. I'm working on a group of cities that are the immigrant remnants of a destroyed continent, one of them is Egyptian with Greek and Turkish influence. Think Middle East circa 1500 AD. The population is Obsidian Dwarves, modified Giff, Africanized gnolls, Arabian genasi. I want a more snake-like race, something like the 1E unthlatu from Dragon Magazine as a PC race. This is all 3.x compatible...

I'm going to go with Shosnar as the name of the city, but the inhabitants are from the lost kingdom of Thosia. The city's ruler is Aneh-Tet, a vampire queen using the Serpentine template from BOEF. I'm thinking she should be a warlock/cleric of Set. Need to figure out what kind of pact she has for her warlock powers.

Thosia sank into the sea with part of the continent several centuries ago. The island Shosnar is on is the last big chunk of the continent's western half. The process was slow, several great cataclysmic earthquakes and tsunamis that flooded a huge area piece by piece. The province that became this island had one city, Aldea, that was ruled by the Sidhe, but now it has several cities built by immigrants from across the continent, much to the disgust of the feys.

Going to allow Thosians to use the Serpentine template and let anyone in Shosnar change their race's preferred class to warlock. Just need an interesting package for that class that makes it snaky...

Here's a few more names for you. Your inquiry prompted me to build an Egyptian Name Generator. I already had one for Old English, German, Spanish, French, Russian, Albanian, Celtic, Chinese, Czech, German, Hindi, Bengalese, Hungarian, Japanese, Javanese, Latin, Arabic, and Greek. I can get a thousand new names, in about 3 seconds... Phonetically, they are all correct, however the generator is based on masculine ancient Egyptian, I'd have to do another generator for female names and places linked to females. It's entertaining to pronounce some of these words out loud as they provide me with inspiration for new adventures and npc's... in addition these provide a good vibe for Scorpion King style kingdoms.

Possibly of interest to you, the Upper Nile was much wetter in the Ancient Egyptian era than it is now... In Southern Egypt they have found temples that were buried deep in the Sahara desert. The heiroglyphs on the walls of those temples told the story of the crocodile gods, were dedicated to the crocodile god,and maps built into the temple depicted that the area that is now desert, was once swampy riverine country dotted with lakes featuring reeds and crocs, much like the modern day Lower Nile.

You can reflavor Lizardfolk. Yuan-tis could be nerfed to be more LA accessible. Check the Serpent Kingdoms book. Also, have an arena. A big tournament where the prize involves lots of competing nationscanhave good combat, and political intrigue fueled roleplay between matches.

Is the a set way to convert gender in Egyptian names, like turning Henry to Henrietta in English?

I'm thinking maximum level adjustment of +2, I don't think Yuan-ti can be balanced well enough to be PCs. Are there stats for PC lizardfolk online?
