Stone Die Sets

Daft Harlot

First Post
I want to get a set of stone dice. Very likely hematite, 14mm. My boyfriend thinks that they won't roll properly and they aren't something I want to get. I tried googling them but they're obscure enough that not much pops up aside maybe one review.

Anyone else have opinions?

I've seen them. They're nice. They roll just fine; if anything, they're superior to most plastic dice because of the extra weight.

The models I'm familiar with are slightly undersized compared to typical plastic dice. One of my friends who have a set had once of the dice split due to an imperfection in the stone, but the manufacturer replaced it at no charge. (I'm not sure who that manufacturer was; sorry.)

I'm not much of a dice fanatic, so they're not a product that I, personally, would buy. But if you're okay paying the premium price for a really nice set of dice and you like the look of 'em, there's no reason not to go for it.

They are available, and quite lovely, but you can't trust a natural stone die to have evenly distributed weight. If precision and a even probability distribution are important to you, then they aren't what you want. If that doesn't matter so much, then keep searching. You'll find them.

i make wooden dice and i can honestly tell you that, they are random enough. i would assume stone (which should be more uniform than wood) will be the same way. with out a MASSIVE weight shift to one face of the die, they will still roll random. i say buy them and challenge your bf to sit down and roll them against a plastic die and i guarantee the probability will be within a few percent of each other.

Okay. The question is, do they tend to be more heavily flawed than plastic dice on one side? If that's the case, then maybe they aren't a good idea. I, myself, don't mind but I don't want them to be heavily flawed on one side.

Thanks for the replies! :3

if you are really worried about random the dice are then take a look at these videos.

in truth, casino dice are the only truly random dice.... everything else is just random enough.

i have a red and green plastic d20 that crits on a regular basis. it's no where near random. my players refer to it as my player killing dice. i keep it around for when a player gets lippy ;)

in short if you like the stone dice then buy them. i make really nice wooden dice. my gaming group likes them so much that we all play with them almost exclusively. for no other reason than they look cool.

i say get the stone dice. i'll bet you dollars to donuts that you swear they roll better for you then anything you already have. just because you'll like them more.

All of this helps me decide on the die set I'm going to pick. I really just like having things that are unique, so that's the big thing about it, but knowing how random they are helps me understand their exact value, as I'm not familiar with all of this. Wooden is kind of an interesting idea, too. However, I might have to just buy obsidian because my friend likes playin necros. Lol. Kidding.

I'm still not sure!
