So we're starting to get some experiences, let me know what you think.

Go with what you played most, or what you felt most strongly about. If you REALLY didn't like your Theater of the Mind style, or you LOVED using minis, vote for those.

Theatre of the Mind and Minis are not diametrically opposed options. Many people use both, as I do.

So, Played using Theatre of the Mind and Minis, and liked it.

B-)

I'm a snowflake. A special snowflake.

I think too much depends on the DM and the group to answer one way or another. A suck DM with a grid will make a suck game. A suck DM without the grid will make a suck game. If the DM knows how to run a game and make the most of the grid's strengths and downplays its weaknesses, then it'll be a fun game. Vice versa.

Two goblin guards at the entrance to the caverns? Mind.
Six kobold scouts in a small forest clearing? Mind.
Five bugbear warriors and two bugbear archers in a tunnel t-section? Mind.
Twenty human soldiers on the battlements? Mind.

Five goblin archers, twelve goblin raiders, three ogres and a goblin shaman, spread around a wide-open cave with pits of alchemical ooze and lava? Add a few cages full of prisoners to be rescued, a crane used to lower the cages into alchemical monster-creating vats, and a few half-formed monsters, angry and on the loose?

Minis. Definitely minis.

No minis here. They make me feel like I'm playing Heroclix. Without Heroes.

If things get complicated, I usually draw a small map and show everyone where they are.

What about the "pretty pretty princess"-es out there?! Where's the poll options for them?!

Poor neglected pretty pretty princesses.:.-(

to the topic at hand, for those of your who do not like or, probably, have never used the TotM...give it a chance! Let your mind wander...your imagination expand...envision the surroundings and play-by-play in your mind...if something is unclear...ASK your DM! They should be able to supply whatever you need to fully envision the combat.

Yes, I'll admit it...I'm a TotM guy. Sorry. Never, in almost 3 decades have I ever used minis to play D&D. We HAD them! We played around with them...not IN the game, but just for fun. lol. We had them, sometimes, in front of us on the floor/table as a representation of what our character might have looked like...but almost NEVER did we "need" them to conceptualize what was happening in the game.

Work with it...try it out...and enjoy it...enjoy the freedom from the mini/grid machine!

POWER TO THE WOTM!

Too much? Apologies. Carry on.
