Silver Standard, Equipment and Masterwork

I'll be just a little disappointed if the silver standard is not used, but it's incredibly easy to house-rule if they don't.

I also like the idea of using a system similar to pre-decimalisation English coinage for a less modern feel, but some of the players didn't like the complexity.

How is this not mostly a cosmetic change? "Change all GP to SP for this campaign" What's so hard? It's not like they've hopped off the decimal system for some of these coin ratios.

D'oh. Electrum is off the decimal system. But yeah, this basically means saying your setting has more silver deposits or gold is more valuable, yadda, yadda. Unless there is some other reason gold must be abundant in your world? Maybe it's used for magic? Just find your preferred base 1 and assign from there.

I use the silver standard in my Pathfinder game, which means two things. First, when the rules or an adventure has me give out gold, I give out silver instead. Second, the price of all magic items is reduced by 90%.

The overall effect is that mundane items and services have more of an impact on the players, and it reigns in some of the ridiculous implications of the magic item economy.

What I want out of D&D Next in this regard is a reasonably well thought out economy where the price of objects makes sense within it, and where gold and silver aren't excessively abundant.

I used a silver standard for many years. And a non-metric one to boot.

re: Dragon hoards: that gold is a thin layer covering copper and silver (its part of the dragon's magic to keep it on top). AND what fish hitting his face said.

I like the gold standard for adventurers.

now it 1gp=10sp=100cp and common laborers fee is 1sp per day, it's ok that a battle ready dagger is 1gp or tenday worth of work(mind, this is the lowest wage). typical sellsword is 1gp per day per level.

so dagger 1gp,
short sword 3gp,
long sword 8gp,
great sword 15gp,

basic food and sleep is 5-10cp per day

Why the Silver standard?
Why not the Electrum standard? I mean, the new currency deserves it.

The treatment of electrum confused me. Not only is it off the decimal system, the description states that (along with platinum) using electrum raises 'suspicion' (whatever that means....DM's choice I guess). Why did you give us a fifty cp coin that disrupts math AND is problematic to use? Why would we want loot that punishes both the player and the PC? Is this punishment for people bugging you about electrum and making jokes about it?

I never made those jokes, I didn't know......... :'(
