Nobody talks about lack of vertical progression?

I think we also need to appreciate that it is the probability factors they are de-scaling. We all saw it in 3ed and 4e that constant growth in probability numbers creates all sorts of gameplay issues. Meanwhile damage and HP ARE going to scale, because they arent prone to the same issues.

I have seen hints of this issue all the way back to 2e (though I wont say I properly understood the issue back then, its taken decades to understand this) and I for one am stoked that the designers have made this recognition. IMHO simply the best decision in D&D evolution they have made to date.

It's discussed; look for the term "flat math" rather than "vertical progression" and you'll see it.

It's flatter math. Not flat math. WotC has already gone on record that To Hit will scale up. Just not within the first three levels.

OP, really? This is one of the few subjects I've been obsessively creating new threads on and discussing with people.

We're all interested to see how characters are going to progress now that we know that toHit doesn't go up every level.

There are two things that interest me about progressing the character. The first is that most progression will happen as a result of higher ability scores. The second is that ability scores and perhaps AC will be limited to a specific set of numbers.

In summary, humanoid natural abilities will cap at 20(+5)
+magic, humanoid abilities could go as high as 30(+10)
monsters with natural + magic abilities are limited to 30(+10)

Furthermore, some here are interested in the possibility of capping AC at a natural 20, with magic AC at 25.

This keeps all bonuses under +10 which makes the game math faster and easier.

DO WANT: Flat Math
DO NOT WANT: Capped and/or Flat Ability Scores

Wizard 20 tells laws of physics to sit in corner, cry some more. That should take more than 20 INT. And Fighter 20 should be able to catch giant boulders and throw them back.

Why should it take more than 20 Int? Other than spellcasters, no other class has any silly restrictions "you must be this tall to play".
