Looking for advice/ideas on running Kingmaker

Carnivle of tears and realm of the fell knight queen that were mentioned earlier. Wondering if you play kingmaker with a set of chars then switch for these 2 modules. Kind of like its happening somewhere near you but not to your kingmaker chars directly. Otherwise id figure it would mess with lvling for the kingmaker module. And who would want their char to die off in a side module :P

No, let the carnival come to the PC's town. It makes things more...festive.

Besides, we found that later on, leveling was jacked anyway.

Same here. With way of the wicked I've just been telling them when they lvl. Really? The random encounters huh? I will let my DM know. I will also advise him to expand the enounter list :P. Seems small.

In the Kingmaker game I am in, we take turns with adding to it. One player would with hold their character while gming. I am the guest dm at this time and I have an underground module I made up to work the party up to the level for the next 'chapter'. We had to do that due to character loss and additions.

so far i have added intrigue regarding kobolds and duegar, and will be introducing grindylows and oread.

They used their normal Kingmaker characters when I ran it. Just integrated the mods into our campaign and it made sense. If they died in those areas, then they died in those areas.

As for leveling, with the APs I find it much easier to just use the assumed leveling noted at the beginning of each module and tell players to level when appropriate.

Not sure I quite understand your first paragraph, but I'm all in favor of your second. IMO/IME, the more political intrigue/fun/screwingthepartyover you can do with other non-human entities around the party.

I mean, my party made friends with kobolds and one of them, dubbed "MickMack" (nee MikMek), was later appointed the kobold ambassador to the "big ugly folk" realm (named Jaegerland by the PCs). He later kinda grew a belly, had a penchant for wearing parachute pants and gold chains but meh.

He served the DM well. Especially when those same industrious kobolds had claimed a certain Eastern travel pass (under the gaze of a roc) and charged a toll...
