Been awhile "The Outbreak"

First Post
Me and my friends use to be playing a DnD 4e campaign centered around an undead apocalypse. When school ended for the year we took a break (frankly i was getting tired of playing undead so often). School starts in a few months now and this summer vacation from the undead worked and I'm ready to start it going again. So hopefully by this weekend or the next weekend, we will be slaying undead again.
So i come to you, enworld, to help with some things. When the campaign started its break the group had just destroyed and undead menace that had completely taken over a city to the west of where the players usually operate at. With his death his undead legion started to go across the country side. The neighboring city fled east, to the players town. With the two western cities gone, the players city will now become the backbone of the defense against the undead.
What i need is adventure ideas to show that the undead are showing up. At this time the players are in control of the city. Walls have been built around the new part of the cities (made by the people coming from the east). A month will have passed and the payers will have taken on slightly new identities in the past month. (For example: the war priest of the raven queen will now also be the village priest of the raven queen, being in charge of funerals and stuff [of course only if he wants this change to happen]).
What i need is idea's for adventure. Ive got some, but i don't have enough to make up for the month of in game time that is suppose to have passed. Any undead related adventure ideas??
Thanks

Hey buddy how ya doing? I have a few ideas to help you out.

The first is the undead could start harrassing other towns around your main town so they can try to surround it and make it easier to invade. You could have the PCs try and prevent this from happening by sending them to those towns and maybe they can fight a recurring commander or different ones. That is up to you.

This one could be a continuation of the first or just start here. The undead are attacking the town and trying to get in to infect the people. Depending on how big the town is, they could start taking over small sections of the town and pretty much the same as above.

The final part to these 3 would be to have a small undead force invade the sewers and the PCs need to kill them. Or have it so they kill the town leader and are using his corpse as a puppet to make the defenses weaker. So the PCs need to figure out what is going on.

Also as a side note, maybe the undead can use demons and other monsters to try and soften the PC's town up too. Don't forget to surprise your group every now and then buddy :P

You could always have a group of undead monsters attack. A bunch of Vapire Orcs or wight trolls are fun.

Ya see i have problems making that kind of monster. what would you suggest i do to make a normal monster undead. What do i do with a skeleton. Or how do i make a zombie. I have those templates for the vampires, mummies, and all those from the dungeons master.

Hey Arctic! :D

Ya man, my plan was to have the undead attacking the main city at night and then returning to smaller towns and hiding within the buildings. and i was thinking about spreading a plauge through some of the smaller villages around the main city that hadn't been killed off already.

Thanks guys

Wolfgang's legendary Kingdom of the Ghouls from 2E Dungeon is my favourite undead-heavy adventure of all time. He updated it - and expanded it - with the Open Design project Empires of the Ghouls.

TL;DR - Have the undead come up from below ground.

Since you were getting burned out on undead, I'd throw in other enemies to make both the story more interesting and the combats.

With the undead spreading through the countryside, you could have the PCs deal with an opportunistic crime family/smuggler operation who is raising food and resource prices.

Maybe there's a death cult in the city who is trying to sabotage the city's defenses so the undead can take over.

The apocalypse could be forcing the humans to band with their historical enemy, a tribe of orcs. The PCs could have to deal with a portion of the orcs who still would rather feud with the human than work with them.

And throw any ideas like these at the PCs all at once to really bring things to a boil!

anyway here are some quest ideas (maybe this will help inspire more people to post here). Feel free to add anymore ideas you guys might have, and to put in your input on what i give here

NOTE: The group is level 7 now, and close to level 8 if i remember correctly.

1) like what arctic said about the villages being attacked and taken over by the undead. I was planning on even starting the campaign back up by having the players clearing out two fishing villages, built on the same river, that had been taken over by the undead. The players would have to go into each building and purge the entire area of undead, plus get back to there home base, in one day or they would be overrun by the undead

2) When we left off there was one thing that hadn't been solved. There was a plauge spreading through the city that would kill people, and then turn them into zombies. The players ever found a cure and purged this plauge but i know in the continued gas that they will not have to, because it will have already been found. What I'm thinking ill due instead is have another city contract this plauge. When the players get sent with the antidote do help the village, they will find that this breed (i almost but "bread" in there) would somehow be immune to the cure.

3) again, going off of what arctic said and the red king to. Undead coming in through the sewers. I was thinking about having this be the start back up adventure. I like blazing skeletons so they would be in there but i think i would try to make some of those wight monsters (not trolls for a sewer fight though). maybe id make wight orcs instead of vampire. The group had already fought orcs in this campaign, so wight orcs could just be these orcs coming back.

4) Im sure that in the month that will have passed in the game world, the groups blade singer will be trying to marry the adopted daughter of the old town commander (which is the job the players now do). I know that in the past month things will be going well between them but that there are two quests they have to do before he can seal the deal. now they don't have to do these two in any order for the wedding to happen, and they won't be told they have to either. only i and you guys will know that tipis is what must happen for the players to get his wedding

4.a) After her father would killed, the killed kidnapped her and took her to his layer, planning to sacrifice her. The players saved her and killed the man, but now he is returning to haunt her in her nightmares. The players need to go into her dreams and confront this man again. Im not sure if I'm going to make the battle a one-on-one fight with each of them battling him in different parts of the dream, a battle between a super-powered version of him against the group, or the group vs him and a small army. Im also not sure how to get the players into the dream. Was thinking maybe a priest of Ioun could help? what do you guys think??

4.b) When Lo-Kag ( the old village commander) died, a priest of Pelor prayed over his body "Please kep him from becoming a mindless creature of undeath". Well that prayer backfired. People say they have been seeing Lo-Kag walking around in the graveyard. The players will need to find out what he wants and help him rest in piece. I also don't know what i could do for this. Proving that his daughter is okay, or that his killer is dead isn't enough, its gotta be something brand new. Ideas??

5) Now this adventure I've had in my head sense before we stopped playing. With the undead coming toward Fort Solitude (the city the players live in) they need something to repel them. The undead are starting to amass in small villages (like in quest 1 above). But the undead will be able to overrun the fort.city with no real problem once a greater intelligence takes over. The players need to find something to keep them away from the fort. They need something that will make the fort protected against the undead. When the players were level three, they headed south of the fort to purge a temple of Pelor that had been overrun by zombies. This made them a friend and an enemy. Not only did Pelor like them for this favor, but so did the only surviving priest from that temple (who has been helping them out sense then). The enemer is Vecna, who has been targeting them ever sense. Now, Orisk Sunhammer (dwarf runepriest of Pelor) thinks he knows the solution the the undead problem, at least for the fort. It is his family's job to keep track of ancient runes of creation (like what the rune priests use). For as long as he can remember he has had a key. This key opens a door in a temple he has never been in. This temple is the same temple the characters purged at level 3. The two priests will send the players back to the temple, have them use the key, and retrieve "the rune of endless fire". In order to do so they will have to pass "The Breath of Pelor" (a fire trap) battle sanctified undead (showing not all undead are eveil), other creatures of fire, and then....a crazy angel who is suppose to protect the rune. After the have done all this and have to rune the can set it in the central watch tower. The rune (according to Orisk) should create eternal sunlight. Keeping the undead at bay. As a reward for this quest, Orisk will show the players how to craft this rune. The players will get the Runepriest level one daily power "the rune of endless fire" plus a few items they find in under the temple. What do you think of this??
