Any More Dragonfire Adept?

RUMBLETiGER

Adventurer
As I kick around ideas for the Upcoming Undead Campaign (Thank you all for your ideas!), as I consider a Dragonfire Adept, I'm curious if any more Breath effects or invocations were ever released for the class, perhaps in a Dragon magazine or some other source.

Or is Dragon Magic the be all and end all for the DFA?

I may ask my DM if I can thumb thru the Warlock invocations to expand the list, but I was wondering if there were more that retained the dragon flavor.

Not directly linked to your request, but if you wish to make the most out of your DFA, make it a Dragonborn (mind aspect) Raptoran.
This way, you'd get breath weapon, flight & enhanced senses out of the box.

The DM has already shown disapproval for flight, so that probably won't fly (pun intended).

Just make sure you take Entangling Exhalation if you're playing a DFA.

As far as more invocations, you might try the Infernal Adept feat found at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/frcc/20070613 near the bottom. It's not much, but it's something. I've spent the past half hour looking for more DFA invocations and can't find anything past the stuff in Dragon Magic. I'd suggest working with your DM to see which invocations you might switch between given the lack of support for the DFA.

It depends on how liberal your DM is with interpreting the rules for the DFAs breath weapon and qualifying for other draconic breath feats.

You'd need to work with your DM a bit, but I imagine a lot of the stuff that's useful for Warlocks can be adapted easily for DFAs. Eldritch Theurge and Eldritch Disciple come to mind, as well as the arcane PrCs and feats usable by Warlocks (e.g. Charm Invocation-->Mindbender-->Mindsight Feat, or maybe even the Obtain Familiar feat). Why not go for a variation on Hellfire Warlock, even? There's a Hellfire Wyrm in MM2, after all...

Furthermore, look into the general mechanics of the DFA class. You have:

Breath weapons, which are (Su), so they can potentially benefit not only from e.g. metabreath feats and metabreath spells, but also from some stuff in the Tome of Magic that adresses (Su) abilities.

Invocations, which are (Sp), so anything and everything to do with (Sp) abilities is fair game - there's quite a bit out there.

Draconic stuff - go draconic feats, especially Draconic Aura.

Natural Armor, fly speed etc. - everything that normally works with these (spells like Scintillating Scales or Wings of Air, feats like Improved NA or Improved Flight) will work.

Make a note of general feats like Ability Focus (Breath Weapon) and Sudden Ability Focus, which can be very handy indeed.

So while you'd need to homebrew a bit if you wanted more DFA material specificall, you can use the class's general mechanics and get some mileage out of existing rules material!

First get Power Surge, so you can treat yourself as having a breath weapon with a cool down time to qualify for meta-breath feats. There are many good options including lingering and clinging increase the amount of time the baddies have to endure your breath weapon. Also Tempest Breath with Larger sizes combined with any effect that increases your breath duration is either checked or blown back for the duration.

Yeah, not flying, so as to not make my DM sad.

Entangling Exhalation is definitely feat number 1.

Dragonfire Adept Handbook is my friend.

Now the Infernal Adept feat is new to me, that's excellent. That's a RAW way to cross invocations. I'll see if it fits my build, thanks!

This is a great handbook however there is a couple major things it gets wrong.
Discorporating Breath being horrible, at base yes a 60 foot line isn't that useful but Shape Breath makes lines into cones and vice versa so for the low price of one round you have a 60 foot cone:lol:. It also is a standard vs. the Fivefold breath being a full-round action. Fivefold breath can't be maximized and anything with two immunities and resistances it will be less effective(aka many outsiders).
