What If Your World Only Had 10 Monsters?

1. human
2. elf
3. Hobbits, halflins, whatever they wanting to be called this edition
4. Red dragon color maybe different but red dragon abilities
5. Ghost
6. Ogre
7. Pixie
8. Giant to be name in the next draft pick.
9. Green Slime.
10. my home brew psuedo dragons.

I took it one step further and rolled randomly and got these, which I now feel compelled to make a setting with...

1. Giant Frogs
2. Ghosts
3. Wererats
4. Twig Blights
5. Rust Monsters
6. Doomspinners (giant spiders)
7. Half-Ogres (somehow not full-blooded ogres...)
8. Crocotta
9. Living Dagger Clouds
10. Canoloths

I'm all for themed settings. At the moment, I've been pondering over one with a heavy dragon theme and another with undead and yet another that's a desert setting with vermins and insectile aberrations. The dragon one would probably fit this one the best: I'm probably going with chromatic dragons only, kobolds and a few dragon-based creatures. Humans will be the only humanoid race. Of course, necromancy exists and due to that, so do undead versions of both dragons and people. Going beyond the 10, I'm probably going to use some of the more exotic dragon types like fang dragons.

For a primarily Kaidan - Japanese horror (PFRPG)

1. Tengu
2. Kappa
3. Hengeyokai
4. Kitsune
5. Korobokuru
6. Oni (dozens of variants)
7. Kami (dozens of variants)
8. Yokai (dozens of variants)
9. Yurei Ghosts (dozens of variants)
10. Gaki Ghouls (dozens of variants)

Really except for some oriental dragons, kirin, etc (which I'd call "11. Densetsu") - the above is the total bestiary for Kaidan.

1. Orc
2. Ogre
3. Cloud Giant

For this section, I'm lining up my monstrous humanoids: Human-size, large, and huge.

4. Dragon

They're iconic. I already default to virtually all of my dragons (regardless of color) being fire-breathers.

5. Skeleton
6. Incorporeal Undead

Here we line up the undead -- one corporeal, the other incorporeal. I'm not sure which incorporeal one I would select. I might end up creating a blended variety that would stand as a stronger, iconic tool.

7. Giant Spider

I only had room for one monstrous vermin on my list. Spiders are cool and creepy, so I decided to let them make the cut.

8. Werewolf

I wanted something that could be "normal human, but monstrous". It was either vampires, werewolves, or doppelgangers. If I was looking for a stronger theme, I might go with vampires (to fill the world with undead). But, in the interest of a slightly wider palette, I decided on werewolves being more versatile than doppelgangers.

9. Dark Elf

A civilized counterpoint to the uncivilized orcs. And they'll be filling up the Underworld and be responsible for creating the abandoned underground cities since this setting has no dwarves.

10. Demon

Not sure which exact demon I would go with. Torn between Mephistopheles and Cthulhu as the archetype, but there's a definite need for something "vast and evil and powerful from beyond the boundaries of the world as we know it".

This is a great idea...let me brainstorm and then I'll put it on the shelf labelled "Worlds to Create".

1. Goblins
2. Lizardmen
3. Ogres
4. Hill Giant
5. Yuan-ti
6. Mind Flayers
7. Zombies
8. Possessing Demon
9. Wraiths
10. Dragon (Green?)

For a primarily Kaidan - Japanese horror
3. Hengeyokai
8. Yokai (dozens of variants)
.

just out of interest what is the difference between Yokai and Hengeyokai?

anyway this thread got me thinking about Peter Pans NeverLand

1 Humans (Pirates, Indians, Lost Boys)
2 Pixies
3 Mermaids
4 Gnomes (mostly Tailors)
5 Giant Crocodiles
6 Birds
7 Awakened Animals
8 Stars
9 The Never Bird (Roc?)

just out of interest what is the difference between Yokai and Hengeyokai?

Technically henge are a subset of yokai, but henge are a PC race in Kaidan, and the vast majority of non-evil, non-oni creatures are yokai in Kaidan (mythic Japan). So I differentiate the PC race from the larger yokai monster races, that aren't made for PCs to play, rather to kill and take their stuff.

Yokai being defined as animal-based, shapechanger races of mythical Japan.

Specifically monsters and not PC races or animals.

1. Skeleton
2. Ghoul
3. Goblin
3. Ogre
4. Werewolf
5. Rakshasa (sp?)
6. Manticore
7. Chimera
8. Griffon
9. Djinn
10. Umber Hulk
