Laser cut stand-ups minis

Deano Calver

First Post
Don't know how many people regularly use stand-ups instead of full miniatures, but when you need lots or something big I find them useful. Recently got a laser cutter and have started making some out of acrylic.
Wondering how many other people make stand-ups or are interested in using them? The ones I've been doing look pretty awesome imho, particularly just made a large red dragon that's 4" x 6" and uses laser engraving to give its scales some sparkle.

Can't post any pics or link to my blog yet, but would love to see anybody else's.

I've used things like cardboard pieces from Melee! and Wizard!, as well as SJGs acardboard Heroes. I've used stuff like those acryllic environmental effects for things like wall of fire or wall of ice and I certainly wish the guys who did Pirates of the Spanish Main had done some fantasy critters.

But acryllic cutouts? Wow! Can't wait until you're able to show us some handiwork!

Acrylic cutouts work really nicely, especially if you like (like I do) transparent or even fluorescent. Haven't yet tried mirror acrylic but could be nice for some types of monsters, especially engraved mirror acrylic.
Its took a few (actually quite a few) iterations before the quality is outstanding, have to tune the laser spot size and really get to grips with CoralDraw (the art package I use) also engraving is quite an art in itself as its hard to visual before cutting quite how deep the lines go, and also the error diffusion convert to B&W will come out.

Just done a few 'big' creatures, but imho appear stunning. Will post pics when I can :)

I bet mirror acryllic would be good for certain modrons and clockwork horrors. Or replicators, if you do supers/Sci Fi gaming.

Yeah wondering about mirror acryllic, don't have any in at the moment, though my usual suppliers do have some. Yeah some tech monsters could look really nice especially with the etching to distort the mirroring in places.

Forget to mention in last post, done a nice set of Orc and related beasties. Also a lovely big space space (its nearly A5 size!) and uses a new engraving technique that I think it working really well.

Pics on my blog, address in my sig.

Had a few request where to get them from, so having been prepping a kickstarter over the holiday period.

Any suggestion on any creatures or anything else, you'd like to see, please let me know.
