Essentials and 'classic' 4e work just fine together- I've run a campaign from 1st to now about 24th level with no problems mixing stuff.

Also, the martial classes are built on modifying basic attacks, so they're a lot of fun if someone is playing a warlord.

Works fine, one of my players is playing an essentials class. The one thing that may come up is that they will get less stuff (in terms of upgrades) because the classes are balanced differently -- make sure they understand the class before signing on. (My player is OK with it.)

To be clear, I have players only using 4e stuff, but am looking at the essentials adventures I picked up (Madness @ (gardmore?) abbey, and that Shadowfell one). I'm likely going to pull certain elements, but overall use my own material.

The group is going to just grab the PCs I make up, so I'm going to keep it simple for them.

More questions:

1) Are there rules for stat options after PHB3 for the earlier races? Like how Minotaurs get Strength, and Con or Wis (iirc). Do Eladrin get Dex and Int or Wis, etc.? I'm guessing it would have been in a Dragon issue.

2) How good is MM2? Arcane Power?

3) Is there a Wis/Cha race?

With your modules, the only thing to look out for that I can think of is damage. Essentials modules will use MM3 damage standards. This is better for serious players - it ups the threat level to a more suitable level - but might be harsh on newbies. Though at low levels it's not very noticeable - pre-MM3 was damage = 8 + 1/2 level, MM3 and Essentials is damage = 8 + level.

(1) Yes - if you check the errata I think you should get this for the PHB races, otherwise it was in Dragon.

(2) I like MM2, though the damage has to be fixed for MM3 standards, and brutes need +2 to hit. Arcane Power is good too, in my view. Besides power and feat lists, it has familiar rules.

(3) Dunno off the top of my head, sorry.

The races are also in the Essentials players books, and should have the variable stat options there.

The earlier monsters books (pre-MM3) suffer from looser monster math. This was not tested enough and suffers at some levels, especially high levels.
Arcane Power is a good book IIRC. Earlier products suffered from the designs not knowing how to write for 4e just yet so the initial products were weaker. Products in the middle of the edition suffered from the rate of publication which led to poor edition and development, allowing broken options to increasingly creep in. But I don't think this was too bad for Arcane Power. Still a good idea to check the updates.

Essentials "compatibility" updates were posted free by WotC. I posted a set of links here, so I'll link that rather than repeat it.

I found this page: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/397_Racial_Ability_Bonuses.pdf

I don't know why I can access a pdf, but that's nice of them. I hope when D&D next comes out, they'll open up the 4e CB to everyone.

EDIT: And, while I'm here, I think I'll state that I want to House Rule half-elves and Tieflings to swap their ability score options.

Tieflings are infernalocks and wizards, and even Rogues in 2e, so I think Int/Con or Dex would have been better. PHB has them as Feylocks and Bards, which is just... weird.

Half-elves in 2e were bards and Rangers, I'd give them Cha and Int/Wis or Int/Dex.
